The Toronto Blue Jays are adapting fast after Bo Bichette’s knee injury. With their star shortstop sidelined, the team has turned to Andres Gimenez, a three-time Gold Glove winner, to test a new infield alignment. The move paid off Friday night as the Blue Jays secured a 6-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Blue Jays Look to Gimenez for Infield Flexibility
Manager John Schneider had an important conversation with Gimenez ahead of the series. The Blue Jays wanted to know if he felt ready to step in at shortstop. Although primarily a second baseman, Gimenez has experience at the position with 84 major league games.
“He was honest with me,” Gimenez said. “We put things on the table, and I just needed practice time to adjust my arm.”
Switching from second to short requires longer throws, but Gimenez felt prepared. His first start at shortstop since July 2022 showed why the Blue Jays trust him.
Solid Debut at Shortstop
On Friday, Gimenez looked confident. He fielded a 107.6 mph rocket from Samuel Basallo in the fifth inning and later turned a clean double play in the seventh. It was a steady performance on the left side of the infield.
Behind him, starter Chris Bassitt delivered five strong innings, allowing only one run and striking out six. The crowd of 34,376 saw the Blue Jays combine sharp defense with timely offense to secure another crucial win.
Bassitt Praises Blue Jays’ Infield Depth
Bassitt credited his infield for helping him record eight of his 15 outs. “I trust him anywhere,” he said of Gimenez. “He’s a Platinum Glover. We’re blessed with a really good infield.”
Despite throwing only 75 pitches, Bassitt was pulled to manage workload. The Blue Jays face a grueling stretch of 13 games in 13 days. The pitcher agreed with the decision, stressing the importance of staying healthy for October.
Offense Finds Its Rhythm
The Blue Jays’ bats came alive in the later innings. Myles Straw hit a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth, followed by Ernie Clement’s RBI single in the seventh. Daulton Varsho’s two-run double and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s RBI hit in the eighth sealed the win.
An earlier error in right-center allowed Davis Schneider to score, giving Toronto an extra edge. By the end, the Blue Jays improved to 85-62, keeping their three-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East standings.
Gimenez Embraces the Challenge
For Gimenez, the move to shortstop is about more than just filling a gap. “It takes you out of your comfort zone,” he admitted. “But it’s important to help the team and give Schneider more flexibility.”
Schneider praised both Gimenez and Clement on the left side of the infield. However, matchups will continue to shape the lineup. Players like Addison Barger and Isiah Kiner-Falefa also provide options for infield rotation.
Future Implications for Blue Jays
Beyond the current season, Gimenez’s performance at shortstop could influence the Blue Jays’ long-term plans. With Bichette entering free agency, Toronto may need to consider alternatives. Gimenez offers a reliable contingency if Bichette departs.
Still, Gimenez isn’t focused on the future just yet. “Unfortunately, we don’t have one of our best players right now,” he said. “We have to move forward and find a solution. I’m not thinking too far ahead. Let’s see how it plays out.”
