A tense meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ended in chaos on Friday. The Oval Office turned into a battleground as Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance accused Zelenskyy of being ungrateful. The fiery exchange, filled with shouting and interruptions, ended without a deal, and Zelenskyy left early.

The discussion was meant to finalize an agreement where Ukraine would grant the U.S. access to its rare minerals in exchange for continued military support. However, things quickly escalated when Trump and Vance demanded Zelenskyy express more gratitude for U.S. aid.

Clash Over U.S. Support

Trump told Zelenskyy he was “gambling with the lives of millions” by negotiating aid while American media was in the room. “You don’t have the cards right now,” Trump said, implying Ukraine had little leverage.

Zelenskyy, clearly frustrated, pushed back, saying he wasn’t playing games. But Trump interrupted, insisting, “Right now, you are playing cards.”

Vance then accused Zelenskyy of failing to show appreciation. “Have you said thank you even once?” he asked. “Offer some words of appreciation for the U.S.A. and the president who’s trying to save your country.”

Meeting Ends in Disarray

Zelenskyy remained composed, occasionally sighing and shaking his head as Trump and Vance spoke over him. The meeting, originally planned as a strategic discussion, fell apart. A scheduled joint press conference was canceled, leaving an empty stage set with American and Ukrainian flags.

Zelenskyy later posted on social media, thanking the U.S. and its people. He emphasized Ukraine’s need for a “just and lasting peace.”

Trump also shared his thoughts online, accusing Zelenskyy of disrespecting the U.S. “He can come back when he is ready for peace,” Trump wrote.

International Reactions

The dramatic confrontation drew reactions from leaders worldwide. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed support for Ukraine, while Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Russia was closely watching the situation.

Political experts believe Trump’s approach could divide public opinion. Some of his supporters may see him as a strong leader, while others may view the incident as unnecessary hostility toward an ally.

Alexandra Chyczij, president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, called Trump and Vance’s behavior “appalling.” She praised Zelenskyy for standing his ground despite their attempts to “humiliate” him.

Meanwhile, reports surfaced that a Russian journalist was removed from the Oval Office during the meeting, as they were not on the approved media list.

What’s Next?

With no deal reached, Ukraine’s military aid remains uncertain. Trump is set to leave Washington for Florida, while Zelenskyy faces mounting pressure back home. The fallout from this heated exchange could have lasting effects on U.S.-Ukraine relations.
