TSMC, the world’s leading maker of advanced AI chips, has taken strict action after discovering suspicious activity linked to a potential trade secret leak. The company has launched legal proceedings and disciplined involved employees after its internal systems flagged unusual behavior.
In a statement shared with Reuters on Tuesday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) explained that its internal monitoring tools picked up the issue early. This led to an immediate investigation and action against the people responsible.
Though the company didn’t release further details—citing an active judicial review—it confirmed the case is now in legal hands.
Suspected Involvement of Former Staff
According to a Nikkei Asia report, several former TSMC employees are under suspicion. They may have tried to access confidential details about TSMC’s cutting-edge 2-nanometer chip technology. Investigators are still working to uncover whether this information was shared outside the company or if more people were involved.
What Makes 2-Nanometer Chips So Important?
TSMC’s 2-nanometer chips represent the very peak of chip-making innovation. These chips are not only smaller but also more powerful and energy-efficient than previous versions. This makes them crucial for everything from smartphones to AI systems. The technology is currently the most advanced in the industry.
A Major Player in the Global Tech Industry
TSMC supplies major tech giants like Nvidia, Apple, and Qualcomm. With such high-profile clients, any leak of internal technology could seriously impact the company’s competitive edge.
Recently, TSMC secured a massive order—300,000 H20 chipsets—from Nvidia, a leading player in the AI space. This makes the protection of its proprietary technology more important than ever.
No Room for Tolerance
The company emphasized its strict stance on protecting trade secrets. “We have zero tolerance for any breach,” TSMC said. It plans to use every legal measure available to pursue those responsible.
Ongoing Investigation
At this point, it's still unknown what the suspects planned to do with the confidential data. Authorities are continuing to investigate how far the breach went and whether any outsiders received the information.
This incident sheds light on the increasing importance of internal security, especially in industries dealing with next-gen technologies.
