Danielle Spencer, remembered by generations of TV viewers as sharp-tongued little sister Dee Thomas on the 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, has died at the age of 60.

Family spokesperson Sandra Jones confirmed that Spencer passed away Monday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

A Sitcom Standout

Spencer’s portrayal of Dee made her one of the most memorable child stars of her era. Dee was quick-witted, serious beyond her years, and famous for calling out her brother Roger “Raj” Thomas and his friends, Dwayne Nelson and Freddie “Rerun” Stubbs.

Her deadpan delivery and trademark line, “Ooh, I’m gonna tell Mama,” became a staple of the show’s humor.

What’s Happening!!, set in Los Angeles’ Watts neighborhood, was among the first network sitcoms to center on the everyday lives of Black teenagers. Inspired by the 1975 film Cooley High, it ran on ABC from 1976 to 1979.

The cast’s chemistry and colorful personalities gave the show a lasting legacy. Raj was the affable dreamer, Dwayne had his cheerful “Hey, hey, hey” greeting, Rerun was the dancing, beret-wearing comic relief, and Dee delivered withering eyerolls and a cutting stare that could stop them in their tracks.

A Life Marked by Resilience

Spencer’s early career was nearly cut short by tragedy. At just 12 years old, during production of the show’s first season, she was in a devastating car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

Her stepfather, Tim Pelt, was killed in the crash. Spencer was left in a coma for three weeks. The accident caused serious spinal and neurological injuries that would affect her health for the rest of her life.

Over the years, she underwent multiple surgeries and faced ongoing mobility challenges. In 2004, she required a wheelchair and had to relearn how to walk. In 2018, she underwent emergency surgery for a bleeding hematoma linked to the 1977 accident. Following that procedure, she could only speak slightly and needed crutches to move.

Her health struggles continued when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. She underwent a double mastectomy in her fight against the disease.

Beyond the Small Screen

Despite her health battles, Spencer returned to acting in the mid-1980s for What’s Happening Now!!, a reboot that ran for three seasons. She later appeared in the 1997 film As Good as It Gets, playing a veterinarian.

Her passion for animals was more than a role. Spencer earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 1993, after studying at the University of California, Davis, and UCLA. She went on to practice veterinary medicine and became a vocal advocate for animal welfare.

Remembering a TV Icon

Fans and colleagues remember Spencer not just for her acting talent but for her warmth and perseverance. Her portrayal of Dee brought authenticity and humor to a groundbreaking sitcom. She stood out in a male-dominated ensemble, holding her own with comedic timing that rivaled her older co-stars.

Her career bridged two very different worlds — Hollywood and veterinary science — yet in both, she left a mark.

What’s Happening!! remains a cultural touchstone, regularly rediscovered by new audiences. For many, Dee Thomas’ quick quips and sharp comebacks remain as fresh today as when the show first aired.

Spencer’s life story was one of determination, survival, and reinvention. From child stardom to overcoming life-altering injuries, she faced each challenge with grit. Whether on screen or in a veterinary clinic, she carried the same commitment and authenticity that made her beloved.

Danielle Spencer’s death leaves a void for fans who grew up watching her and for those who admired her resilience off-screen. She will be remembered not just as Dee, the little sister who always had something to say, but as a woman who lived with courage until the very end.
