A young skier remains in critical condition after an avalanche struck the Nakiska ski area west of Calgary on Friday afternoon.
Cochrane RCMP and several emergency crews rushed to the mountain around 12:45 p.m. after receiving reports that two skiers had been caught in a slide.
Two Skiers Swept Away
Police said the avalanche pulled both skiers into the snow and buried them. One skier managed to free themselves without injuries. Rescuers then searched for the second skier.
First responders located the missing individual unresponsive under the snow. Paramedics transported the youth by ground ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. Calgary EMS confirmed that the patient is a young person and remains in life-threatening condition.
Officials have not released further details about the skier’s identity.
Community Responds With Support
Nakiska ski area staff shared a message of sympathy following the incident.
“Our hearts are with the family and friends of the individual,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“We are sending our deepest care to the family dealing with this horrible situation. In these difficult times, our entire mountain community shares in your grief and sorrow.”
The resort has not announced any immediate changes to operations but confirmed that authorities continue to investigate.
Investigation Underway
Police and emergency officials are reviewing the circumstances that led to the avalanche. Investigators will examine weather conditions, snowpack stability and other factors that may have contributed to the slide.
Avalanches can occur quickly and without warning, especially in mountainous regions during winter months. Skiers and snowboarders often rely on posted advisories and patrol updates to assess risk before heading onto slopes.
Nakiska, located in Kananaskis Country, attracts skiers from across southern Alberta. The mountain has long served as a popular winter destination due to its proximity to Calgary.
Friday’s incident has shaken the local skiing community. Fellow skiers and staff remained visibly concerned as emergency crews worked on the mountain.
Authorities have not provided further updates on the youth’s condition as of Friday evening.
Emergency services encourage anyone spending time in alpine areas to remain aware of changing conditions and follow safety guidance issued by ski patrol and avalanche experts.
The investigation continues.
