Police arrested Tyler Robinson, 22, after a 33-hour search. He is accused of killing activist Charlie Kirk during a university event in Utah. Kirk was shot while debating students on Wednesday.
Robinson surrendered on Thursday night after his father convinced him to give up. His father contacted a youth pastor, who then called federal officers. Authorities detained Robinson at 10 p.m.
Trump Demands Harsh Punishment
President Donald Trump announced the arrest. He said Robinson should face the death penalty. The killing shocked many across the country and highlighted deep political divisions.
Governor Shares Details of Attack
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson arrived at Utah Valley University hours before the shooting. Cameras showed him near the scene. Robinson wore the same clothes when arrested.
A family member told investigators that Robinson had become more political. They said he recently spoke angrily about Kirk visiting Utah, calling him “full of hate and spreading hate.”
Rifle and Messages Found
Police found messages on Discord linked to Robinson. They showed plans to recover a rifle from a hiding place.
The FBI later found the weapon near campus. It was a Mauser .30-06 rifle with a mounted scope. Shell casings had engravings, including “hey fascist! CATCH!” and “O Bella ciao, Bella ciao.”
“Bella ciao” is the name of an Italian resistance song from the Second World War.
Formal Charges Expected
Prosecutors plan to file charges on Tuesday. Robinson faces counts of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony firearm discharge.
Students React to Arrest
Utah Valley University has remained closed since the attack. Police tape surrounds much of the campus.
Students said they feel both relief and shame. “He was apprehended in Washington County, where I’m from,” said student McKinley Shinkle. “I just feel deeply ashamed.”
Her cousin, Anthony, added, “I’m definitely relieved. I just want to know why this happened.”
Suspect’s Background
Robinson lives in St. George, near Zion National Park. He studies in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College.
Public records show he registered as an unaffiliated voter. He did not vote in the last two presidential elections. His father runs a cabinet business, and his mother works as a social worker. The family belongs to the Mormon church.
