Tyler Robinson, 22, was charged Tuesday with aggravated murder in the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors presented evidence including a note Robinson left and text messages to his partner admitting he planned the attack. DNA on the rifle trigger matched Robinson, according to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray. Conviction could result in the death penalty.
Planning the Attack
Robinson spent over a week preparing to shoot Kirk, a prominent conservative leader credited with energizing young Republican voters. In one note to his partner, Robinson wrote: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
Gray called the killing “an American tragedy.” Kirk was shot on September 10 while speaking with students at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors said Robinson fired a bolt-action rifle from the roof of a nearby building in Orem, Utah.
Court Appearance
Robinson appeared by video from jail before a judge. He nodded occasionally but mostly stared ahead as the charges were read. The judge appointed an attorney to represent him. His family has not commented publicly since his arrest.
Motive Under Investigation
Authorities have not confirmed Robinson’s motive. Gray noted a text from Robinson: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” Investigators are considering whether Kirk’s anti-transgender views played a role, but Gray said that question will be for a jury.
Robinson’s partner, possibly transgender, is cooperating with police. Texts show the partner was shocked and asked why Robinson planned the shooting.
Family and Political Shifts
Robinson’s mother told authorities that her son became more politically progressive in the past year, supporting LGBTQ rights after dating someone transgender. Differences in political views, particularly with his father, were a frequent topic at home.
Authorities said Robinson initially wanted to kill himself when confronted by his parents. A family friend persuaded him to surrender. He was arrested Thursday near St. George, Utah, about 240 miles from the shooting site.
Aftermath and Evidence
In texts to his partner after the shooting, Robinson discussed retrieving his rifle but faced police patrols. He also instructed his partner to delete messages and conceal evidence. Prosecutors filed additional charges for obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and discharge of a firearm.
FBI Director Kash Patel said agents are investigating Robinson’s online activity, including a gaming chatroom on Discord with more than 20 participants, to ensure no broader plot exists.
Public Reaction
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was a leading voice in conservative politics and close to former President Donald Trump. His death has sparked national concern over political violence and social divisions. Some critics of Kirk’s statements continue to debate his legacy, while Republicans push for consequences for those seen to disrespect him.
