A recent report by the UN envoy focused on sexual violence in conflict has stirred significant attention with its findings regarding the actions of Hamas during its surprise attack in southern Israel on October 7th. According to the report released on Monday, there are substantial grounds to suspect that Hamas perpetrated acts of rape, sexualized torture, and other forms of cruel treatment towards women during the assault.

Pramila Patten, the UN envoy, who led a technical team's visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank, indicated that there's credible evidence suggesting the continuation of such violence. The team, gathering firsthand accounts from released hostages, discovered disturbing instances where women and children faced sexual violence, including rape and sexualized torture, while in captivity.

This report comes nearly five months after the October 7th attacks, which resulted in a significant loss of lives and the capture of hundreds of individuals. The aftermath of the conflict has been devastating, with widespread destruction in the Gaza Strip and a staggering number of casualties.

While Hamas has denied allegations of sexual assault in the past, Patten emphasized that the purpose of their investigation was to gather information for the UN Secretary-General's annual report on sexual violence in conflict, not to directly investigate the allegations.

One of the key recommendations in the report is to urge Israel to grant access to human rights organizations for comprehensive investigations into the alleged violations. Patten expressed hope that the UN Security Council would support this initiative.

Dr. Nadav Davidovitch, a public health physician working with Physicians for Human Rights Israel, expressed his emotional reaction to the acknowledgement of these crimes by the UN, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Despite efforts to encourage victims to come forward, the team was unable to meet with any directly. However, they conducted numerous interviews and meetings with relevant institutions and individuals, gathering substantial information about the events of October 7th and their aftermath.

The report details instances of sexual violence occurring at various locations, including a music festival and its surroundings, where victims were subjected to rape and gang rape before being killed. The team also found evidence of sexual violence along roads and at shelters where people sought refuge.

While some allegations could not be verified, the report underscores the urgent need for further investigation to uncover the full extent of sexual violence during the October 7th attacks and their aftermath.

In conclusion, the report sheds light on the horrific acts of sexual violence perpetrated during the conflict, emphasizing the importance of thorough investigation and accountability.
