Ukraine has launched another bold strike against the Crimean Bridge — this time using underwater explosives. The bridge, also known as the Kerch Bridge, links Russia to the occupied Crimean Peninsula. It serves as a critical supply line for Russian forces and a powerful symbol of Moscow’s control over Crimea.

On Tuesday, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) confirmed responsibility for the attack. The SBU revealed it had secretly planted explosives on the bridge’s supporting pillars. The first detonation occurred at 4:44 a.m., targeting both the road and rail portions of the bridge.

Underwater Explosives Severely Damage Key Infrastructure

According to the SBU, the operation was months in the making. Around 1,100 kilograms of explosives were used to damage the underwater piers that hold up the bridge. Though the full extent of the damage remains unclear, it was enough to halt traffic twice on Tuesday.

Traffic initially stopped early in the morning following the blast. Later, it was suspended again in the afternoon before resuming just before 6 p.m. local time.

Strategic and Symbolic: Why the Crimean Bridge Matters

This marks the third time Ukraine has targeted the Crimean Bridge since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. The first strike happened in October 2022 when a fuel truck exploded, igniting flames. In July 2023, a sea drone was used in another daring assault.

The bridge is more than just a transport link. Built after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, the project cost around $3.7 billion and was personally inaugurated by President Vladimir Putin in 2018. For Putin, it represents a lasting bond between Russia and Crimea.

But for Ukraine, it’s a military asset — and a legitimate target.

SBU Chief: “We Never Do the Same Thing Twice”

Vasyl Malyuk, head of the SBU, oversaw the latest operation. He described the bridge as a “legitimate military target” because it supports Russia’s war efforts in mainland Ukraine.

“God loves the Trinity,” Malyuk said. “We’ve struck the Crimean Bridge twice before — in 2022 and 2023. This time, we attacked from underwater.”
Malyuk emphasized the importance of constantly evolving tactics. “The SBU never repeats the same move twice,” he stated.

Broader Campaign: Ukraine Hits Russia’s Air Fleet

This attack comes just days after Ukraine reportedly carried out a drone strike on Russian airbases. Those airbases housed nuclear-capable bombers, key assets in Moscow’s long-range strategy.

The SBU claimed that the drone attack damaged 34% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers. Estimated costs: a staggering $7 billion. Malyuk also coordinated this operation, underlining the agency’s expanding reach and ambition.

Russia’s Response: Traffic Halted, Waters Blocked

In reaction to Tuesday’s underwater blast, Russia temporarily stopped maritime traffic near Sevastopol. This city, the largest in Crimea, is vital to Russia’s naval operations in the Black Sea. State media outlet RIA Novosti confirmed the maritime suspension.

Moscow has yet to release a detailed report on the extent of the bridge’s structural damage. However, past incidents suggest rapid repair efforts are likely underway. In previous strikes, damaged sections were quickly restored to maintain supply lines and project control.

Ukraine’s Message Is Loud and Clear

This latest attack on the Crimean Bridge sends a strong message — no target is out of reach. By striking a key Russian logistical route for the third time, and using new tactics, Ukraine is demonstrating both its resolve and evolving capabilities.

With each operation, Ukraine aims to weaken Russia’s military strength and disrupt the systems keeping the war going. The use of underwater explosives on such a symbolic structure underlines how the battle for Ukraine is being fought with both strategy and symbolism.
