Thompson, who had been staying at a nearby hotel, was approaching the Hilton just before 6:45 a.m. when the assailant, who had reportedly been waiting for him, opened fire. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, “This does not appear to be a random act of violence. All indications point to a premeditated, targeted attack.”

Detective Chief Joseph Kenny revealed that surveillance footage showed the suspect arriving at the scene minutes before Thompson. The shooter allowed several others to pass before firing at the executive. After the attack, the gunman fled on foot before switching to an electric bike, disappearing into Central Park.

Thompson was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital at 7:12 a.m. He had no security detail and appeared unaware of any imminent danger. Police are still investigating the motive and examining possible threats Thompson had mentioned to his wife. Paulette Thompson told NBC News her husband had recently spoken of being threatened, though she did not have further details.

Tributes and Shock

Thompson, who had worked with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and served as CEO for over three years, was remembered as a respected leader and friend. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” UnitedHealth Group wrote in a social media statement, expressing condolences to his family and pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty announced the abrupt cancellation of the investors conference following the incident. “We’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” Witty said during the event.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, calling the tragedy “horrifying” and a significant loss for the healthcare and business community.

Broader Context and Investigation

UnitedHealthcare is the largest U.S. health insurance provider, serving millions of Americans. The company has recently faced challenges related to a major data breach at its Change Healthcare unit, which disrupted services for months.

Law enforcement is exploring all angles, including whether the threats Thompson mentioned were linked to professional disputes. However, authorities in Thompson’s Minnesota hometown reported no prior threats against him.

The shooting occurred in a busy part of Manhattan near major landmarks, including Rockefeller Center. Despite the morning tragedy, the area’s annual Christmas tree lighting proceeded under heightened security.

As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with information about the suspect, last seen riding into Central Park on an electric bike, to come forward.
