Universal Studios is set to bring a magical new adventure to the UK. The company has confirmed plans to build its first-ever European theme park and resort just outside London. The announcement was made on Wednesday, alongside British officials.
The new park will take shape in Bedford, roughly 50 miles north of the capital. Construction is scheduled to begin next year on a vast 476-acre site, formerly a brickyard. If all goes as planned, doors could open to the public by 2031.
A Boost for Jobs and Joy
Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared his excitement about the project. He highlighted the significant economic and cultural impact it would have. According to him, the project is expected to create 28,000 jobs, adding both growth and happiness to the region.
“People told me government would be a roller-coaster,” he joked, “but I don’t think this is what they meant.”
What to Expect from the Theme Park
Although Universal hasn’t revealed the full list of attractions yet, there’s plenty to speculate. The studio is known for blockbuster franchises like Jurassic Park, Fast & Furious, E.T., Minions, and Kung Fu Panda. It’s also closely tied to the Harry Potter universe through a long-standing partnership with Warner Bros.
While the new theme park won’t be exclusively Potter-themed, fans can likely expect elements inspired by the wizarding world. This is especially fitting, given the UK’s deep ties to the franchise. The books are set in Scotland, and Warner Bros. already runs a popular studio tour in Watford—just 30 miles south of Bedford.
A Convenient Location for Tourists
The future resort will be easily accessible. It's close to a major rail line and Luton Airport, which is undergoing expansion. The initial phase of the project also includes a 500-room hotel, hinting at the scale and ambition behind the development.
Universal’s Expanding Global Footprint
This project marks a major milestone for Universal, a division of Comcast Corp. The company already operates five large-scale entertainment resorts in Orlando, Los Angeles, Osaka, Beijing, and Singapore. The upcoming UK park will add a sixth location to its global portfolio, tapping into Europe’s strong tourism market.
With this new venture, Universal is not only expanding its physical footprint but also deepening its connection to fans across the continent. The magic of the movies—and possibly a bit of wizardry—is coming closer to home for millions.
