Marie-Eve Sylvestre has been named president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa. She will be the first woman to lead the university since it was founded in 1848. CTV

The University of Ottawa will welcome its first female president in its long history. Marie-Eve Sylvestre will take charge of the university starting July 1, 2025. The university announced her appointment on Wednesday morning.

A Historic Appointment

Since 1848, no woman has led the University of Ottawa. Sylvestre’s new role as president and vice-chancellor marks a major milestone for the school. She will succeed Jacques Frémont, who has led the university since 2016.

A Long-Time Member of the University

Sylvestre has strong ties to the university. She began working there as a professor in 2005. Since 2019, she has served as the dean of the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section. Her deep knowledge and experience make her a natural choice for the position.

Proud to Lead the University

Sylvestre shared her excitement about the new role. She said, “It’s a great honour and privilege to lead the institution that has been my home for 20 years.” Walking on the campus every day, she feels proud of how much the community has grown.

She added, “Together, we have transformed this university into one of the top five research-intensive universities in Canada, one that attracts students and researchers from 150 countries to the very heart of our nation’s capital.”

Strong Academic Background

Sylvestre holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Université de Montréal. She also earned a master’s degree and a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) from Harvard University. Her academic record supports her leadership role.

Leadership Praise

Jennifer Adams, chair of the university’s Board of Governors, spoke highly of Sylvestre. Adams said, “She brings a deep commitment to the institution, a distinguished record as a researcher in law, and valuable experience on international committees.”

Adams added, “Her dedication to forging new partnerships, developing innovative programs for students, and, above all, her collaborative and relationship-driven leadership style will serve the University well.”

Selection Process

The university’s presidential selection committee chose Sylvestre after searching both inside and outside the university. This careful process showed the importance of finding the right leader for the future.

Role of the President

The president acts as the chief executive officer of the university. This means Sylvestre will oversee the academic mission and general administration. She will also hold the title of vice-chancellor.

Looking Ahead

As the new president, Sylvestre faces the challenge of guiding the university forward. Her experience and vision will help the university continue to grow in innovation, research, and learning.
