The reigning Olympic champions from the United States women's national ice hockey team will not be attending this year’s State of the Union address, politely turning down an invitation from Donald Trump due to scheduling conflicts.
Scheduling Conflicts Behind the Decision
In a statement released through USA Hockey, the organization expressed gratitude for the recognition but confirmed that the players would be unable to attend because of previously arranged academic and professional responsibilities following the Winter Games.
The message emphasized that the athletes felt honored by the invitation and appreciated the acknowledgment of their Olympic triumph.
The White House did not immediately comment on the development.
Olympic Glory for Both Teams
The women’s team secured the gold medal after a high-intensity final against Canada, reclaiming the top spot in one of international hockey’s fiercest rivalries. Just days later, the U.S. men’s team also defeated Canada in an overtime thriller to capture gold in their tournament.
The back-to-back victories prompted the president to personally invite the men’s squad during a celebratory phone call after their win.
Trump’s Remark About the Invitation
While extending the invitation to the men’s team, Trump joked that failing to invite the women’s champions as well could lead to political consequences, saying he might face impeachment if they were left out.
The comment was delivered in a light-hearted tone, but it underscored the prominence of both teams’ achievements on the Olympic stage.
Unclear If Men’s Team Will Attend
It remains uncertain whether the men’s team will be present at the address. No official confirmation has been given regarding their plans.
Recognition Without Attendance
Although the women’s team will not appear at the State of the Union, USA Hockey reiterated that the players value the national spotlight on their accomplishment.
Their decision reflects logistical realities rather than any lack of appreciation, closing the door on the ceremonial visit while keeping the focus on their historic gold-medal run.
