Fans leave as police and emergency personnel deal with an incident after a car collided with pedestrians near the Liver building during the Premier League winning parade in Liverpool, England, Monday May 26, 2025
Liverpool’s Premier League victory turned tragic when a speeding van plowed into cheering fans on Monday. What began as a day of celebration ended with screams, sirens, and over 45 injured supporters.
Celebration Turns to Chaos on Parade Route
A gray minivan tore through a crowd of Liverpool fans as the victory parade neared its end. Thousands had gathered in red jerseys and scarves to mark the club's historic 20th league title. But as the bus carrying Liverpool’s heroes crawled along the 10-mile route, horror struck.
Eyewitnesses described the van speeding into the crowd. One video showed a man tossed into the air before the van surged into a sea of supporters.
“It happened so fast,” said witness Harry Rashid, who was with his family. “We heard thuds, like people being hit.”
Driver Acted Alone, Not a Terror Attack
Police confirmed the driver, a 53-year-old British man, acted alone. He was immediately arrested. Officials ruled out terrorism, urging people not to spread misinformation.
“Extensive inquiries are ongoing,” police stated, asking the public to avoid sharing disturbing footage online.
Dozens Injured, Including Children
Paramedics rushed to the scene. Twenty-seven people were taken to the hospital, two critically hurt. Another 20 were treated at the location.
At least four children were among the injured. One paramedic on a bicycle was struck but escaped injury.
Firefighters rescued four victims, including a child, trapped beneath the van.
“It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day,” said City Council leader Liam Robinson.
Witnesses Describe Panic and Heroism
Fans on the scene said they initially heard honking before chaos erupted.
Peter Jones, who traveled from the Isle of Man, said, “The van flew by us, smashing into people. It was terrifying.”
Several bystanders tried to stop the vehicle. Some smashed its windows in an attempt to intervene. But the driver accelerated again, plowing through more fans.
“It looked deliberate,” Rashid added. “People were screaming. My daughter was crying. It was terrifying.”
Liverpool Community Stands United
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the act, praising the emergency services and the community’s resilience.
“Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes safely,” he said. “Liverpool stands strong, and the nation stands with them.”
Liverpool Football Club released a short statement offering thoughts and prayers to those affected. The Premier League also expressed shock and support.
A Painful Reminder of Past Tragedies
This incident evokes painful memories for Liverpool fans. The city still mourns the 97 lives lost in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.
In 2020, fans were unable to celebrate the league win due to COVID-19 restrictions. This year was meant to be their long-awaited moment.
Despite rain and a heavy police presence, fans had packed the streets. They waved flags, climbed traffic lights, and lit red smoke flares. The parade passed iconic city landmarks as fireworks burst above the Royal Liver Building.
But celebration turned into trauma in seconds.
A Call for Calm and Caution Online
Authorities have urged caution as the investigation continues. Police confirmed the suspect was white to prevent online speculation.
This comes amid recent incidents where social media misinformation fueled riots and violence, particularly targeting refugees.
The hope now is for healing — for the victims, the city, and a fan base that once again saw joy overshadowed by tragedy.
Liverpool will rise, as it always does. But for now, it grieves.
