Retail specialist Bruce Winder shares his thoughts on Walmart Canada’s recent move to cut prices on hundreds of everyday products.

Walmart Canada has announced price cuts on hundreds of everyday items—but experts warn that customers should look beyond the tags.

The retail giant says it’s trying to help Canadians manage their budgets by lowering the cost of basic necessities like fruits, vegetables, toilet paper, shampoo, cheese, bottled water, and ground beef. But retail analyst Bruce Winder urges shoppers to be cautious.

He explained that while the move may seem generous, it could be a marketing tactic. “When a company drops prices on a basket of popular goods, it creates the impression that the entire store is offering the best deals,” said Winder during an interview with CTVNews.ca. “That’s not always true.”

According to Winder, Walmart’s strategy may have more to do with recent shifts in consumer habits. As more Canadians choose to shop at local stores in support of homegrown businesses, Walmart—a U.S.-based brand—could be feeling the pressure. “There’s a growing ‘buy Canadian’ movement,” he said. “People want to support companies rooted here. Walmart may be reacting to that shift.”

Canadians Feeling the Financial Pinch
The timing of Walmart’s price drop isn’t random. Many Canadians are currently facing tight household budgets due to rising living costs, and that’s something Walmart is acknowledging.

Venessa Yates, Walmart Canada’s president and CEO, said the brand recognizes the financial strain families are under. “We know Canadians are feeling stretched more than ever,” she said in a press release. “We’ve reduced the prices of hundreds of essential items, both in stores and online, because we want to help them save.”

Yates added that the company will maintain a steady supply of these discounted products to avoid shortfalls and frustration among shoppers.

Thousands of Rollbacks Offered
Beyond groceries and hygiene products, Walmart has also rolled out deeper discounts in other categories since early June. According to Sam Wankowski, Walmart Canada’s chief merchandising officer, customers can expect to find over 8,000 new “rollback” offers across various departments, including electronics, clothing, and wellness.

These rollbacks—temporary price drops on selected items—will appear in-store and on Walmart.ca each week.

What Should Shoppers Do?
While these markdowns may ease financial pressure, Winder suggests taking a few extra minutes to compare prices with other retailers before assuming Walmart is the cheapest option. “Just because a few items are marked down doesn’t mean you’re getting the best value overall,” he said.

CTVNews.ca has asked Walmart Canada for details on how much these discounts amount to. An update is expected when the company provides a response.
