A significant recall has been announced for Great Value Apple Juice sold at Walmart stores. The recall affects 9,535 eight-ounce bottles of juice, sold in six-packs and labeled with the UPC 0-78742-29655-5. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the recall on August 15, noting that the juice contains inorganic arsenic levels higher than the safety threshold set by industry standards.
On August 23, the recall was classified as Class II by the FDA. This classification means the product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," though the likelihood of serious health issues is considered low. Inorganic arsenic, a more hazardous form of arsenic compared to organic arsenic, has been linked to various health risks. Long-term exposure can lead to skin disorders, bladder and lung cancers, cardiovascular problems, and other serious conditions. Short-term exposure can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and numbness in extremities.

The recall specifically targets Great Value Apple Juice with a "best if used by" date of December 28, 2024. The recall was initiated by Refresco Beverages US Inc., based in Tampa, FL, the company responsible for the product. This recall is a precautionary measure due to the identified contamination.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that inorganic arsenic is a known carcinogen and a significant contaminant in drinking water worldwide. In contrast, organic arsenic found in seafood is less harmful. The FDA’s decision to issue the recall reflects the seriousness of the contamination issue, aiming to prevent potential health risks associated with consuming the affected juice.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled juice are advised to return it to Walmart for a full refund or dispose of it properly. The recall underscores the importance of food safety and vigilance in monitoring product quality.
