Acclaimed director Wes Anderson is back with a fresh cinematic journey, The Phoenician Scheme. The trailer teases a riveting story centered around a wealthy European tycoon and his estranged daughter, wrapped in Anderson’s signature storytelling style.
A Complicated Bond at the Core
Benicio del Toro leads the cast as Zsa-zsa Korda, a powerful and eccentric business magnate. Opposite him, Mia Threapleton plays Sister Liesel, a nun who also happens to be Korda’s daughter. The complex relationship between the two promises to be the emotional anchor of the film.
Michael Cera takes on the role of Bjorn Lund, Sister Liesel’s tutor. Together, the trio’s dynamic seems to push the film into intriguing emotional territory.
A Cast Packed with Familiar Faces
Anderson's latest feature doesn’t shy away from assembling a high-profile cast. Joining the lead trio are Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Each actor brings their unique flavor to the film, and fans can expect Anderson’s signature ensemble storytelling to make the most of every appearance.
The Creative Team Behind the Vision
Shot in Germany, The Phoenician Scheme was co-written by Anderson and frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. The film’s music is composed by Alexandre Desplat, another regular in Anderson’s creative circle.
Production was handled by Anderson’s own American Empirical Pictures. Jeremy Dawson, John Peet, and Steven Rales (via Indian Paintbrush) also played key roles in bringing the project to life. Focus Features, which previously distributed Asteroid City and Moonrise Kingdom, is backing the release.
Building on a Celebrated Filmography
Anderson continues to evolve his storytelling while staying true to his unique cinematic voice. His recent works include Asteroid City (2023) and The French Dispatch (2021). He also won his first Oscar in 2024 for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a short film that reaffirmed his place in the industry as both a visionary and a risk-taker.
Despite his recognizable visual style, Anderson insists that each new film is its own creative pursuit.
“The one thing I never think about, really, when I’m making a film is myself or my own style, my voice,” Anderson shared in 2023. “I think about what’s new for this movie, how do I make this movie the best it can be, how do I get the greatest collaborators together.”
Release Strategy
The Phoenician Scheme will premiere in select theaters on May 30. A wider release will follow on June 6, giving audiences across the globe a chance to dive into Anderson’s latest world of quirky characters, layered relationships, and visual artistry.
With a powerful cast, a rich storyline, and the signature Wes Anderson touch, this upcoming release is already generating buzz among fans and critics alike.
