Russia launched a rare overnight drone and missile assault on western Ukraine, striking several key sites including an American-owned electronics factory. The attack, one of Moscow’s biggest this year, comes as global leaders intensify efforts to negotiate peace in the three-year-long war.
Rare Strike on Western Ukraine
Ukraine’s air force reported 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles launched in the overnight raid. While eastern Ukraine has faced heavy bombardments since the start of the conflict, western regions have largely been spared from such concentrated strikes.
The attack hit near the Hungarian border, damaging the Flex electronics factory, one of the largest American investments in Ukraine. Around 600 night-shift workers were inside the plant when missiles struck. Six were injured.
Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, confirmed the strike. He stressed that more than half of the chamber’s 600 member companies have already suffered damage from Russian attacks. “Russia is not seeking peace. It is deliberately targeting American business in Ukraine,” Hunder said.
Civilian Areas Also Hit
In Lviv, a major city in western Ukraine, the strikes killed one person and injured three. Officials reported damage to 26 residential buildings, a kindergarten, and administrative offices. Cluster munitions were used in the attack, regional authorities said.
Overall, 15 civilians were reported injured across the affected regions.
Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Escalation
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, accusing Moscow of trying to sabotage peace negotiations. He argued that the attack on an American-owned business was intentional and symbolic.
“They knew exactly where they fired. This was a deliberate assault on American property and investment,” Zelenskyy said. He urged stronger sanctions against Russia and called on world leaders to respond with more pressure.
Zelenskyy also accused the Kremlin of avoiding direct talks. “Russia does not want this war to end. Instead, it expands attacks on civilian and economic targets,” he wrote.
Trump, Putin, and the Peace Push
The attack comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian and European leaders in Washington. Trump had earlier spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Moscow insists it targeted Ukrainian military-industrial sites, including drone factories, depots, and troop positions. The Russian Defense Ministry denied aiming at civilians.
Trump has openly questioned Putin’s sincerity about ending the war. “He talks nice and then bombs everybody,” Trump remarked recently. On Thursday, he criticized former President Joe Biden for failing to give Ukraine stronger weapons. “You cannot win a war without offense,” Trump said.

Divisions Over Security Guarantees
Talks are underway in Europe and the U.S. on possible security guarantees for Ukraine. Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Finland, Italy, NATO, and the European Commission joined U.S. officials in discussions this week.
A senior American official confirmed “all options are being considered” but ruled out U.S. combat troops on Ukrainian soil. Pentagon officials emphasized that Washington prefers a minimal direct military role.
European leaders, however, acknowledged they must take greater responsibility for securing the region if peace talks succeed.
Putin’s Position on Talks
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Putin is willing to meet Zelenskyy, but only after “key issues” are addressed. Analysts believe this could delay negotiations for months, as both sides remain far apart.
Zelenskyy, however, signaled readiness to meet Putin soon, possibly in Switzerland, Austria, or Turkey. He also suggested a trilateral summit including Trump.
Ukraine Strikes Back
Ukraine has continued drone strikes inside Russia, hitting oil refineries and infrastructure that fuel Moscow’s war effort. Russian officials confirmed recent Ukrainian drone attacks injured civilians in Belgorod and damaged apartments, a business site, and vehicles.
Meanwhile, Russian gasoline prices have surged to record highs, highlighting the impact of Ukraine’s counterattacks.
