Whitecaps players celebrate in style after sealing their spot in the Canadian Championship final.
The Vancouver Whitecaps have done it again. For the fourth consecutive year, they are heading to the Canadian Championship final. The defending champions proved too strong for Forge FC, sealing a dominant 4-0 victory in the semifinal second leg on Tuesday night. With the win, the Whitecaps advanced with a 6-2 aggregate score after drawing 2-2 in the first leg on August 13.
Berhalter Leads the Charge
Sebastian Berhalter was at the heart of the Whitecaps’ performance. He converted a penalty kick and also registered an assist. His composure and creativity gave Vancouver the edge early and set the tone for the evening.
Tristan Blackmon, J.C. Ngando, and Jayden Nelson added goals of their own. Goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer made a key save to earn a clean sheet, keeping Forge FC from finding any breakthrough.
Whitecaps Dominate Possession and Chances
The Whitecaps showed their class from start to finish. They controlled 57 percent of possession and dictated the flow of the game. Vancouver outshot Forge 23-6, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on target.
The MLS side left no doubt about their superiority over the Canadian Premier League leaders. It was a complete performance in front of the home fans at B.C. Place.
Early Goals Set the Tone
The Whitecaps wasted no time in applying pressure. In just the seventh minute, Berhalter delivered a corner that Tristan Blackmon headed home for his fifth goal of the season.
Ngando doubled the advantage in the 29th minute with a stunning strike from outside the box. His right-footed effort crashed off the post before rippling the net.
Forge nearly responded four minutes later when Nana Ampomah fired a shot from the penalty area’s edge. Boehmer reacted quickly, safely collecting the ball to preserve Vancouver’s lead.
Berhalter’s Penalty Extends the Lead
Vancouver added a third goal early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Forge’s Marko Jevremovic pulled down Belal Halbouni inside the box. The referee pointed straight to the spot.
Berhalter confidently stepped up and converted, making it 3-0 in the 49th minute. His strike effectively ended Forge’s hopes of mounting a comeback.
Injury Concern for Blackmon
Not everything went Vancouver’s way. Defender Tristan Blackmon suffered a knee injury late in the match after challenging for a loose ball. He was substituted off and did not put weight on his right leg as he left the field.
The Whitecaps will be hoping for positive news on his condition ahead of the Canadian Championship final.
Nelson Caps Off the Victory
The home crowd was treated to one final moment of joy in the 85th minute. Rayan Elloumi delivered a sharp pass across the six-yard box, where Jayden Nelson calmly tapped in the fourth goal.
That sealed a commanding 4-0 victory for the three-time defending champions, who continue to chase history in the tournament.
Road to the Final
The Whitecaps will host the Canadian Championship final at B.C. Place on October 1. Their opponent will be decided after Thursday’s semifinal between Atletico Ottawa and Vancouver FC. Atletico holds a 3-1 lead after the first leg.
Toronto FC remains the only club to win the Canadian Championship four years in a row, between 2009 and 2012. The Whitecaps now stand just one step away from matching that remarkable achievement.
A Growing Tournament
The Canadian Championship has grown rapidly over the years. Until 2011, only three teams competed. FC Edmonton’s entry expanded the format, and in 2019, six CPL teams were added. This year’s edition featured 15 clubs across six leagues, highlighting the tournament’s national reach.
Match Notes
The Whitecaps currently hold a 15-7-6 record in MLS play, while Forge FC sits atop the CPL standings with a 14-2-7 record. Star midfielder Thomas Muller did not feature off the bench for Vancouver. An enthusiastic crowd of 10,752 fans witnessed the semifinal clash at B.C. Place.
