Following trials with the "SearchGPT" prototype, OpenAI has now added the web search feature directly to the ChatGPT chatbot. Business Standard

OpenAI has unveiled exciting new features for ChatGPT, enhancing its capabilities significantly. The most notable addition is a web search functionality, allowing users to access information much like they would with a traditional search engine such as Google. This feature will enable ChatGPT to provide real-time updates on various topics, including sports scores, news, and stock prices, enriching the user experience.
Previously known as the “SearchGPT” prototype during testing, this web search feature is now fully integrated into ChatGPT. Users will benefit from a more natural language interface that combines the ease of conversation with the immediacy of current information. ChatGPT can automatically perform a web search based on user prompts, but users can also initiate a search themselves by clicking on a dedicated web search icon. This integration allows the chatbot to respond with web-sourced information while maintaining a conversational tone.

One of the standout elements of the new search feature is its contextual understanding. Users can ask follow-up questions, and ChatGPT will recognize the context, providing relevant and coherent answers. To enhance usability further, the system will include links to sources within conversations. This feature will open a sidebar with links to articles, blog posts, and other resources, offering users a deeper dive into topics of interest. Additionally, new visual designs will display information like weather forecasts, stock updates, sports scores, news highlights, and maps, making the interface more engaging and informative.

Currently, this search functionality is available to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, with plans for a broader rollout to free users in the near future.

In addition to the search capabilities, OpenAI has also introduced Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT’s desktop application on both Mac and Windows platforms. This feature, which was initially launched with the GPT-4o model earlier in the year, allows for more fluid and dynamic conversations. Users can now interrupt ChatGPT at any point, facilitating a more interactive dialogue. The system is designed to pick up on the user’s emotions and respond appropriately, enhancing the sense of a personal interaction.

Earlier in 2024, Advanced Voice Mode was launched on the mobile app, and now it is making its way to desktop users, specifically those who are ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers.

Looking ahead, OpenAI confirmed that it is working on integrating ChatGPT with Apple’s ecosystem. Scheduled for December, this integration will connect ChatGPT with Apple’s AI-driven writing tools and the Siri voice assistant. Users of eligible iPhones, Macs, and iPads will be able to leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities to assist with various requests. Additionally, Apple’s Writing Tools and Siri will gain improved understanding of images and documents through this integration, further enhancing the functionality available to Apple users.

OpenAI is actively working to enhance ChatGPT's user experience by introducing web search functionality, making it easier to access timely information. The Advanced Voice Mode will improve conversational interactions, allowing for a more personal touch. Moreover, the forthcoming integration with Apple’s services promises to bring even more versatility to ChatGPT, making it a valuable tool for users across different platforms.
