Nanaimo residents will soon have a new way to travel. Uber, the world’s largest rideshare platform, is officially launching in the city on May 28. This move is part of Uber’s long-anticipated expansion across British Columbia.

Rideshare Service Expands Across B.C.

Uber first entered British Columbia in January 2020, operating in the Greater Vancouver area. Since then, demand for the service has grown across the province. Many residents and visitors have regularly opened the app in hopes of finding a ride in areas where the service wasn't yet available.

Recognizing this demand, Uber started working on broader provincial coverage. In May 2023, the company secured a licence transfer through B.C.’s Passenger Transportation Board. This approval allowed Uber to expand outside the initial cities. It quickly launched in Victoria and Kelowna in June 2023.

Full Province Coverage Starting Next Week

Next week marks a significant milestone. Uber will go live in mid-sized cities like Nanaimo and Kamloops. Keerthana Rang, Uber Canada's corporate communications lead, confirmed that the app will be functional across the province from May 28. However, she noted that ride availability will depend on how many drivers are online in each area.

Driver Recruitment in Full Swing

To ensure smooth operations, Uber has been actively recruiting drivers in recent months. Mid-sized cities are a focus area. The more drivers sign up, the better the experience for riders—shorter wait times and wider availability.

To attract new drivers in smaller markets, Uber is offering a $500 incentive. Eligible drivers must complete their profile and complete at least 10 trips within four weeks of activation to qualify.

A Welcome Addition, With Caution

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog expressed support for Uber’s arrival but emphasized the importance of local taxi services. He noted that Nanaimo’s taxi industry has served the community well for years.

Krog believes competition could push existing services to improve even further. However, he stressed that fair regulation is essential to protect the public interest and ensure a level playing field.

Residents Gain More Travel Choices

With Uber’s launch, residents and visitors in Nanaimo and other B.C. cities will have more transportation options. Whether it’s commuting to work, heading to appointments, or enjoying a night out—ridesharing offers a convenient alternative.

What to Expect When Uber Launches

When the app goes live, users can book rides just as they would in cities like Vancouver or Victoria. However, initial availability may vary, especially in smaller communities. Uber plans to continue growing its driver base to meet future demand.

Rideshare Set to Transform Local Transport

The arrival of Uber marks a new chapter in transportation for Nanaimo and many other cities in B.C. As more drivers join the platform, the convenience and efficiency of rideshare is expected to improve further.

With financial incentives, expanding coverage, and rising demand, Uber’s expansion in British Columbia could reshape local mobility in the months to come.
