Majiah Washington Responds to Questions at News Conference in Portland, Oregon, on January 18, 2024

January 19, 2024

Amid a hazardous storm that enveloped Portland in ice, tragedy struck when a red SUV became entangled with a downed power line, creating a perilous situation. The incident unfolded outside the home of Majiah Washington, who, upon witnessing the distressing scene, immediately sprang into action.

The neighbour's pregnant 21-year-old daughter, frantic to safeguard her baby from the perilous setting, pleaded with her boyfriend. In a desperate attempt to reach safety, the boyfriend, carrying their child, ascended the icy driveway but tragically slipped and inadvertently made contact with a live wire. The result was a brief burst of fire and smoke.

Undeterred by the perilous circumstances, Washington, 18, who was in communication with emergency services, saw the baby lying on top of its father, both seemingly lifeless. Remarkably, the infant exhibited signs of life, prompting Washington to brave the hazardous conditions to rescue the child. Despite the tragic deaths of three individuals due to electrocution, Washington managed to retrieve the baby unharmed.

Rick Graves, spokesperson for Portland Fire and Rescue commended Washington's heroic efforts, acknowledging her pivotal role in saving the infant's life. The circumstances surrounding her ability to navigate the live wire unscathed remain a perplexing aspect for authorities.

The recent severe weather conditions in the Pacific Northwest, characterized by snow, freezing rain, ice, and frigid temperatures, have exacted a heavy toll. At least 10 deaths in Oregon have been attributed to the inclement weather, resulting from hypothermia, falling trees, or utility poles. Additionally, five deaths in the Seattle area were reported due to hypothermia.

The weight of ice on trees and power lines, coupled with freezing conditions, has made them susceptible to snapping, particularly in the face of strong winds. This vulnerability was tragically evident in the electrocution deaths, where a large branch broke from a tree, landed on utility wires, and pushed one onto the immobilized vehicle.

Ronald Briggs, the neighbour directly affected by the tragic incident, confirmed the loss of his 21-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son. Recounting the heart-wrenching events, Briggs expressed the pain of witnessing his children's demise and the futility of attempting to protect his son from the same fate.

In the aftermath of this devastating storm, communities grapple with the profound loss of lives and the challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns.
