However, despite the election's outcome, a substantial number of dissenters staged protests at polling stations during noon, while the United States criticized the election, labeling it as neither free nor fair.
Supporters of Navalny had urged fellow Russians to participate in the "Noon against Putin" protests, denouncing the leader as a corrupt authoritarian. Despite tight security measures, the extent of participation in these opposition demonstrations remained unquantified.
Putin dismissed the impact of the protests on the election outcome but emphasized the need to penalize those who hindered others from voting through acts of vandalism.
Observations by Reuters journalists revealed an increased voter turnout, particularly among younger demographics, at noon in various polling stations across major cities like Moscow, St Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg. While some voters expressed their dissent, distinguishing them from regular voters was challenging.
Navalny supporters in exile shared protest footage via YouTube, both from within Russia and abroad, highlighting their opposition to Putin's regime. Ruslan Shaveddinov of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation underscored the symbolic victory of defying fear and isolation, demonstrating unity among the people.
The protests resulted in the arrest of at least 74 individuals, as reported by OVD-Info, an organization monitoring dissent crackdowns. Preceding the election, sporadic incidents of protest occurred, including vandalism of voting booths and ballot boxes, with some opponents defacing ballots with anti-Putin slogans.
