Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity has unveiled a shopping-focused hub in a strategic move to expand its search platform and compete with Google's hold on the search engine market. The feature, introduced on Monday, adds a unique shopping experience for users, aiming to make the platform a go-to destination for online shoppers.
Perplexity, backed by influential names such as Jeff Bezos and leading AI chipmaker Nvidia, is stepping up its game by introducing “product cards.” These visually formatted cards provide essential details about items in response to shopping-related questions, streamlining the shopping experience for users.

The shopping hub is powered by integrations with platforms like Shopify, enabling the service to access real-time information about products from global merchants. The feature focuses on businesses operating on Shopify’s Canadian e-commerce network that ship products to the United States, making it particularly valuable for American consumers.

One standout tool in the new rollout is "Snap to Shop." This visual search feature allows users to upload photos of an item, which Perplexity then uses to find matching or similar products. This innovation aims to create a seamless shopping journey by connecting user queries with visually appealing and relevant results.

To further enhance its offerings, Perplexity has also introduced a "Merchant Program." This initiative invites retailers to provide detailed product information directly to the platform, ensuring users have access to the most accurate and up-to-date options. The program is designed to attract merchants who want greater visibility for their products, helping Perplexity build a robust and diverse product database.

Currently, these features are available exclusively in the United States, but the company has plans to expand them to other countries in the future. While the exact timeline for global rollout remains unclear, the startup's focus on creating a comprehensive shopping hub underscores its commitment to growth and innovation.

Perplexity’s ambitions don’t stop there. The startup is reportedly raising new investment, with its valuation projected to reach an impressive $9 billion. This marks a significant step for the company as it aims to solidify its position as a key player in both the AI and search engine markets.

Competition in the AI-driven search space is heating up, particularly with OpenAI entering the fray. OpenAI, known for its groundbreaking generative AI tools, has introduced new search features to its ChatGPT platform, directly challenging Perplexity’s growing presence.

With its latest updates, Perplexity seeks to not only attract users but also redefine how people interact with search engines for shopping needs. By combining cutting-edge AI tools with user-friendly features, the startup is positioning itself as a strong competitor in an increasingly crowded market.
