The Bahamas has reached an all-time high in tourism, welcoming over 11.22 million international visitors in 2024. This surpasses the previous year’s 9.65 million arrivals and cements the country’s status as a leading travel destination in the Caribbean.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, I. Chester Cooper, expressed pride in the achievement, stating that The Bahamas has not only met but exceeded its tourism goals. He credited the success to the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, industry partners, and the warm hospitality of the Bahamian people.
Despite challenges like Hurricanes Milton and Oscar, The Bahamas experienced remarkable growth. The number of visitors arriving by air and sea increased by 16.2% compared to 2023 and by an incredible 54.7% from 2019. While air arrivals remained steady at 1.7 million, they were still 3.3% higher than in 2019.
December 2024 was particularly noteworthy, setting a new record with 1.15 million visitors—14% higher than the same period in 2023 and a 62% increase from 2019.
Grand Bahama Island and Abaco saw strong growth, with air arrivals rising 8.7% and 11.9%, respectively. These increases mark a significant recovery from the impacts of Hurricane Dorian and the COVID-19 pandemic.
A report from the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) highlighted the cruise industry's vital role in the country’s economy. In the 2023/2024 cruise season, The Bahamas earned an impressive $654.8 million from cruise tourism. When factoring in employment, taxes, and other fees, the total economic impact exceeded $1 billion, reinforcing the sector’s importance to the nation's prosperity.
Another key factor in the country’s success has been foreign investments. Over the past two years, The Bahamas has attracted more than $10 billion in investments from major luxury brands like Rosewood, Six Senses, Montage, Park Hyatt, Bulgari, and Four Seasons Residences. These developments have enhanced the country’s reputation as a top-tier travel destination.
Cooper expressed gratitude to industry stakeholders, the Ministry of Tourism staff, and the Bahamian people, who have embraced the idea that "Tourism is Everybody’s Business."
Tourism Director General Latia Duncombe also praised the record-breaking numbers, emphasizing that The Bahamas' rapid growth reflects strong marketing strategies, industry collaborations, and the unmatched hospitality of its citizens. She reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to setting new tourism standards and welcoming even more visitors in the future.
