Banff has gained fresh attention from American travellers, not just for its winter sports but also as a rising luxury getaway. A major skijoring event last weekend helped place the mountain town in the spotlight, yet new travel search data shows interest in Banff runs much deeper than a single event.

Recent research based on online search trends reveals a strong jump in interest from U.S. travellers looking for high-end travel experiences. The data points to Banff as one of the fastest-rising luxury destinations heading into 2026.

Travel Searches Show Changing Preferences

The research examined American online searches for luxury and budget travel destinations. It focused on year-over-year growth to find where interest increased the most. The findings suggest travellers now mix careful spending with a desire for memorable, premium experiences.

“Our research shows some interesting shifts in travel preferences as we head into 2026,” says Rhonda Sloan, Head of Marketing at Travel Guard. “Travelers are becoming more adventurous in their choices, striking a balance between budget-conscious trips and aspirational experiences.”

This shift appears to benefit destinations that offer natural beauty alongside upscale lodging and unique experiences.

Banff Stands Out on the Global List

Banff earned ninth place on the list of luxury destinations with the biggest rise in American search interest. Searches related to luxury travel in Banff increased by 33 per cent over the past year. It ranked alongside global destinations known for high-end tourism, including Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, and Macau.

Notably, Banff was the only Canadian location to appear on either the luxury or value travel lists. That distinction places the Alberta town in rare company and highlights its growing appeal beyond traditional outdoor tourism.

Luxury travel searches rose sharply elsewhere as well, with Abu Dhabi leading the list, followed by Acapulco and Punta del Este. Still, Banff’s presence among these destinations signals strong international recognition.

What Draws Luxury Travellers to Banff

Travellers often associate Banff with dramatic mountain views, national parks, and winter sports. In recent years, the town has also expanded its luxury offerings, including high-end hotels, fine dining, and exclusive outdoor experiences.

Events such as skijoring add to the destination’s charm by blending tradition, sport, and spectacle. Combined with scenery and premium accommodations, Banff now appeals to travellers seeking comfort alongside adventure.

Budget Destinations Also Gain Attention

While Banff gained ground in luxury travel searches, other parts of the world attracted travellers looking to stretch their budgets. Crete topped the list for value travel, followed by Kathmandu, known as the gateway to Everest Base Camp. Cappadocia in Türkiye ranked third, drawing attention for its unique landscapes and cave-style hotels.

These results show travellers continue to explore diverse options, whether searching for affordable adventure or refined comfort.
