Over half of Canada’s tourism businesses worry U.S. trade issues may hurt summer income.
Tourism businesses across Canada are feeling uneasy as the summer season begins. Over half of them are worried that ongoing trade problems between Canada and the U.S. may affect their earnings. A new report shows that 58% of small business owners fear these tensions could hurt travel this season.
Summer Revenue Is Crucial
For many tourism businesses, summer is the most important time of the year. “Summer income helps pay down debts and cover rising costs,” said Louis-Philippe Gauthier, a representative of a national small business group.
Some businesses believe their earnings will be the same as last year. Others think it may either improve or decline. The mood is uncertain.
Tourists Change Their Habits
Tourist behaviour has changed too. About 37% of business owners noticed something different this year. Many of them saw more interest from Canadians choosing to explore their own country. Others said visitors are going for more affordable travel options.
Fewer Canadians Heading to the U.S.
A recent survey found that 10% of Canadians cancelled work trips to the U.S. Around 22% cancelled personal trips. Just 11% of Canadians plan to travel to the U.S. this summer.
Instead, 56% of Canadians with travel plans will stay within their own province. Another 51% will visit other parts of Canada. About 21% will travel to countries outside North America.
Time to Support Local Travel
“This is the perfect time to explore Canada and support local communities,” said Gauthier. He added that when people shop at local small businesses, 66 cents of every dollar stays in the local area. This helps create jobs and boost the economy.
Calls for Government Action
To support the tourism sector, business leaders are asking the government to make things easier. They want fewer rules for permits and licences. They also want strong promotion of local travel and shopping.
“Tourism creates many jobs, especially in small businesses,” said Kalith Nanayakkara, a policy expert. “Governments and Canadians must work together to support these businesses.”
Travel at Home Can Help the Economy
Tourism experts say exploring Canada this summer can help people make special memories while giving local businesses a much-needed lift. From coast to coast, Canadians are being encouraged to visit nearby towns and attractions.
Two surveys support this data. One was done with over 2,100 Canadian business owners. Another one included over 1,500 adult Canadians and was completed earlier this June.
