Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, announced on Wednesday that it is undergoing significant organizational changes, resulting in layoffs within its voice-activated Google Assistant software and the Devices and Services team. The restructuring, initiated in the latter half of 2023, also impacted the workforce at the company's mapping app, Waze.

According to reports by news platform Semafor and tech media website 9to5Google, Google Assistant is witnessing job cuts affecting hundreds of employees. Simultaneously, the Devices and Services team is eliminating several hundred roles, primarily within the 1P AR hardware team. This reorganization has prompted the departure of key figures, including co-founders of Google-owned Fitbit, James Park and Eric Friedman, along with other Fitbit leaders.

A spokesperson for Google confirmed these changes, emphasizing the company's ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and resource alignment with product priorities. The spokesperson, responding to inquiries from Reuters, stated that various teams have been implementing organizational adjustments throughout the second half of 2023. While the spokesperson did not disclose the specific number of roles affected, it is evident that global workforce reductions are occurring.

Alphabet, Google's parent company, boasted 182,381 employees worldwide as of September 2023. However, the exact headcount for the Google Assistant software and Devices and Services teams remains undisclosed.

The rationale behind these workforce adjustments aligns with Google's pursuit, along with other tech companies, to integrate generative AI capabilities into their products. This race to incorporate generative AI features reflects the industry's broader trend, aiming to enhance virtual assistant functionalities and provide personalized assistance with reasoning on mobile devices.

In October of the previous year, Google unveiled plans to integrate generative AI features from its Bard chatbot into the Google virtual assistant. The objective is to furnish users with advanced capabilities for personalized help and reasoning on mobile devices.

As Google continues to navigate the evolving landscape of AI-driven technologies, these organizational changes underscore the company's commitment to adaptability and strategic alignment with emerging product priorities. The impact of these layoffs on the affected employees and the overall trajectory of Google's technological advancements remains to be seen in the coming months.
