Greenland wants travelers to consider it for their next vacation. The island offers unforgettable sights—from whales in icy waters to remote villages tucked between snowy peaks. Locals now aim to show the world what makes Greenland special.
Greenland’s business minister, Naaja Nathanielsen, says the tourism industry fits well with local culture. “Tourism is about sharing stories and heritage,” she said. “As Inuit, storytelling is part of who we are.”
Making the most of global attention
Recently, Greenland made headlines after the former U.S. president expressed interest in buying it. While Greenland and Denmark quickly rejected the idea, the global spotlight brought attention to the island like never before.
Some locals now see this as a chance to grow tourism. Frank Møller, who runs a tour company in Nuuk, said, “It has put Greenland on the world map. We’ve used that attention to our benefit.”
Easier travel to Greenland
A big change is making Greenland more reachable. A new direct flight now connects Nuuk with Newark, New Jersey. This is the first time an American airline offers a nonstop route to Greenland. Before this, travelers had to fly through Denmark or Iceland.
This new route makes visiting Greenland much easier for tourists from North America.
Cruise tourism already growing
Cruise ships are also bringing in thousands of visitors. In 2024 alone, about 150,000 people came to Greenland by cruise. That number could grow as more travelers discover what the island has to offer.
Long-term tourism plan in place
Greenland recently introduced a 10-year tourism development plan. The goal is to grow the industry while making sure it benefits locals. The plan outlines ways to boost the economy, create jobs, and protect the environment.
Tourism leaders want to make sure growth is done in a balanced way. Møller believes it’s important to include all voices from local communities. He wants development to be fair and respectful to the people who live there.
Recognized as a top new destination
Greenland was also named one of the top ten emerging travel spots to watch this year. This recognition could help attract more curious travelers looking for a unique adventure.
With direct flights, cruise stops, and a strong plan in place, Greenland is getting ready to welcome more visitors. Locals are proud of their land and eager to share its beauty, history, and traditions.
