The $15.3 million investment into Health Compass II is more than just funding; it's a step towards transforming healthcare in Canada through the power of AI

Canada’s Global Innovation Cluster for digital technologies, known as DIGITAL, is investing $15.3 million into the Health Compass II project, aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare. This initiative is a continuation of a previous effort backed by DIGITAL, which provided $3.1 million for the first phase in 2022.

The Health Compass II project, totaling $44 million, is spearheaded by ORX Surgical, a clinic management software company based in Richmond, BC. The project also involves collaboration with Tali AI, Healwell AI, Phelix AI, WELL Health, and Simon Fraser University (SFU). Funding amounts for the partners vary; WELL Health will receive $6.8 million, while Healwell AI will get $1.7 million. Together, the partners contribute $29 million to the project.

Health Compass II includes four modules focused on enhancing patient engagement, automating administrative tasks, assisting with healthcare documentation, and informing clinical decisions. Each partner is responsible for different aspects of the project:

Healwell AI: Developing a clinical decision support module to identify early diagnosis opportunities.

ORX Surgical: Creating a virtual agent to assist patients in finding care providers.

Phelix AI: Automating administrative tasks through AI algorithms.

Tali AI: Building an AI voice assistant to capture medical information from doctor-patient interactions.

WELL Health will act as the commercialization partner, integrating all four modules into its existing platform, which supports over 3,400 clinics and 34,000 healthcare providers.

DIGITAL's CEO, Sue Paish, highlighted the importance of leveraging Canada’s leadership in AI research to develop practical applications that address global challenges while promoting Canadian companies.

The funding announcement took place at WELL Health’s Vancouver office, attended by François-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. This event is part of ongoing efforts to support federal investments in BC’s healthtech sector.

To date, DIGITAL has committed $255 million to various projects, with $200 million focused on AI-enabled technology solutions. Earlier this year, they invested $10.5 million in additional AI healthtech projects, including initiatives aimed at using AI for wound assessment and recruiting for clinical trials.

The $15.3 million investment in Health Compass II represents a significant advancement in Canada's healthcare system. By integrating AI technology, the project aims to improve patient care and streamline processes, showcasing the collaboration among leading healthtech companies and academic institutions in the pursuit of health innovation.
