Canada continues to rank as a popular destination for 2026, drawing international students and travellers eager to experience its natural beauty. With Prime Minister Mark Carney visiting India this week, tourism has become part of broader diplomatic discussions.
Recent updates to Canada’s visa processing system suggest a renewed focus on welcoming Indian visitors. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has shortened visitor visa processing times for applicants in India.
Shorter Wait Times for Visitor Visas
Indian travellers can now expect their visitor visas to be processed in about 83 days. Previously, applicants waited around 99 days. This 16-day reduction comes after officials completed a year-end review and reassigned staff to focus on visitor visas ahead of the busy summer season.
The change brings relief to families planning reunions and tourists preparing trips to Canada’s well-known destinations.
New Biometric Appointment System
Canada has also introduced changes to how applicants book biometric appointments at Visa Application Centres in India.
Since February 21, 2026, applicants must use the new Appointment Management System. Those attending biometric appointments on or after February 24 must upload their Biometric Instruction Letter to confirm eligibility before scheduling.
The updated system allows travellers to select preferred dates and times and reschedule or cancel appointments online. Officials say the changes aim to create a smoother application process and prevent unnecessary bookings.
Preparing for Peak Travel Season
As summer approaches, authorities have shifted additional officers into visitor visa processing. The move aims to reduce backlogs and ensure smoother travel approvals during high-demand periods.
Canada issued more than 200,000 visas to Indian nationals in 2023, confirming India as a major source of visitors. Travellers must obtain a Temporary Resident Visa or, in some cases, an electronic travel authorization before arrival.
Officials advise applicants to review the latest visa requirements and travel guidelines before making plans.
