Jason Momoa, known for his role in Warner Bros. and DC’s Aquaman franchise, has officially been cast as Lobo in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The news, confirmed by Deadline, marks an exciting new chapter for Momoa within the DC Universe.

Speculation about Momoa playing Lobo has circulated for years, even before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC Studios. Momoa has openly expressed his enthusiasm for the role, frequently sharing his admiration for the character. In a recent Instagram post, the actor shared a screenshot of comments from a past interview, where he spoke about his longtime connection to the antihero.

“I collect comics, and while I don’t as much anymore, Lobo was always my favorite. I’ve always wanted to play him because, honestly, it’s the perfect role for me,” Momoa shared in the post. Reflecting on his passion for the character, he added, “If DC ever came to me with Lobo, it would be a resounding ‘f*ck yeah.’” Alongside the screenshot, Momoa captioned his post with a simple yet telling message: “They called.”

Lobo, a notorious antihero from the planet Czarnia, is celebrated for his superhuman strength, regenerative powers, and near invulnerability. Known for his chaotic and irreverent personality, Lobo thrives as a bounty hunter who revels in mayhem and destruction. The character was created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, making his first appearance in Omega Men #3 in June 1983.

While plot details for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow remain under wraps, the film is already shaping up to be a star-studded affair. Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) will take on the titular role, with Matthias Schoenaerts portraying the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hill. Eve Ridley has also joined the cast as Ruthye Mary Knolle.

Craig Gillespie is set to direct, working from a script by Ana Nogueira. The project draws inspiration from Tom King’s 2022 comic series of the same name, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. DC Studios co-chairs Gunn and Safran will produce, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as executive producer. Production is scheduled to begin on January 13.

Momoa’s involvement further solidifies his standing within the DC franchise. His Aquaman films have collectively grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. Beyond his DC commitments, Momoa has a slate of high-profile projects on the horizon, including Warner Bros.’ Minecraft Movie (April 4 release), the hybrid live-action/animated film Animal Friends, and Fast X: Part 2. He’s also set to star in Apple TV+’s Chief of War and Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew alongside Dave Bautista.

With Momoa stepping into the role of Lobo, fans can expect a thrilling and chaotic addition to the DC Universe when Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters.
