The wait is over for John Wick fans! After years of speculation, John Wick: Chapter 5 is officially in development at Lionsgate, with Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski returning for the next chapter in the action-packed franchise.
A Billion-Dollar Franchise Moves Forward
The announcement came at CinemaCon 2024, where Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson confirmed the news. The studio is working closely with producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, along with Stahelski and Reeves, to bring the next installment to life.
Fogelson assured fans that the returning team wouldn’t move forward unless they had a "phenomenal and fresh" story to tell. With the franchise already crossing $1 billion at the global box office, expectations are sky-high.
A Story Worth Telling
Producers Iwanyk and Lee emphasized the importance of getting the story right.
"It’s crucial to take John’s journey to the next step in a way that does justice to the character and the world we’ve built," they said in a joint statement.
The announcement follows the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, which grossed over $440 million worldwide in 2023. The film ended with Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) standing at John Wick’s grave, leaving fans questioning whether the legendary assassin was truly gone.
Expanding the John Wick Universe
The John Wick franchise began in 2014, introducing fans to Reeves' iconic hitman drawn back into the underworld. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most successful action series of all time.
The universe is also expanding beyond the main films. The spinoff movie Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, hits theaters on June 6, 2024. Additionally, a new TV series, John Wick: Under the High Table, is currently in development, with Stahelski and Reeves as executive producers.
Hints of a Sequel Were Always There
Lionsgate has long hinted at the possibility of a fifth installment. Back in May 2023, former Lionsgate chair Joe Drake mentioned that they were "building out the world" and that a fifth film would emerge organically from the evolving storyline.
Now, with the official confirmation, fans can prepare for another thrilling chapter in the John Wick saga. While details on the plot and release date remain under wraps, one thing is certain—John Wick isn’t done yet.
