Love, Loss, and Legacy: A Bittersweet Farewell in 1923 Season 2 Finale
After a season filled with danger, devotion, and dramatic near-misses, 1923 ended its second and final season with a powerful mix of reunion and heartbreak. The story of Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) came full circle—giving fans the romantic payoff they longed for, while also delivering a gut-wrenching farewell.
Against All Odds, A Reunion Worth Waiting For
Alexandra’s tireless journey across oceans and continents finally pays off. The long-separated lovers are reunited near a snowy train track in Montana. Spencer jumps off a moving train, sprinting toward his frostbitten wife in a dramatic moment that captures the heart of the series.

Despite the frozen backdrop, filming took place in sweltering Texas heat, using clever effects and artificial snow. “It was over 100 degrees,” Schlaepfer shared. “We had to fake shivering while sweating buckets.”
Sklenar added, “That final sprint—it had to show how hard they fought to find each other. It felt real.”
A New Dutton is Born
Their reunion quickly turns into a defining moment in the Dutton saga. Alex gives birth to a premature baby boy, naming him John. While there’s no official confirmation, viewers are led to believe this is John Dutton II—the future father of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III in Yellowstone.
“It’s fun to imagine,” Schlaepfer teased, but reminded fans that only creator Taylor Sheridan knows the full family tree. Sklenar added with a smile, “John’s a common name.”

A Love Story Cut Short
Just as peace settles in, tragedy strikes. Alex, weakened by her ordeal, dies in the hospital holding baby John, with Spencer by her side. “They fall asleep together, and she slips away,” Schlaepfer revealed. The scene was so poignant that co-stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren were present during filming.
The loss hits Spencer hard. He channels his grief into action, seeking revenge on family enemy Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton). In a chilling scene, Spencer confronts and kills Whitfield during breakfast, bringing closure in true Dutton fashion.
“There were no grief podcasts in 1923,” Sklenar said. “Men had to process pain through action. For Spencer, vengeance was a way to honor love.”
An End and a Beginning
Alex is laid to rest in the Dutton family cemetery, a rare honor for someone not born into the clan. Her life, though short, changed the course of the family’s future.
“She lived fiercely and died with purpose,” said Schlaepfer. “She earned her place.”
While 1923 was always intended to span just two seasons, the story is far from over. The saga is set to continue with 1944, likely centered on a grown-up John Dutton II. The final scene shows an elderly Spencer beside Alex’s grave, leaving his fate open-ended.
“Maybe he’s just napping,” Sklenar joked. “Or maybe there’s more story to tell—even if it’s Spencer dragging a rifle in his old age.”

As 1923 closes its chapter, it leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and roots. “We gave everything to this story,” Sklenar said. “It was a privilege to be part of the Dutton family.”
