More Canadians are opting for adventure closer to home by booking small-ship expedition cruises along the country’s remote coasts. According to a leading expedition cruise company, 71% of their 2025 bookings are from Canadian travelers. The number is expected to grow to 78% for 2026, showing a clear rise in domestic travel interest.

The company’s CEO expressed excitement about this trend. They highlighted how more locals are keen to discover Canada’s breathtaking scenery, rich history, and diverse cultures. The CEO also emphasized that, for nearly 40 years, their company has been guiding travelers through these waters, collaborating with local experts. They believe these expeditions promote education, exploration, and stronger connections to Canada’s natural wonders.

This growing demand for expedition cruises is not just a Canadian trend. According to the latest cruise industry report, expedition itineraries have become the fastest-growing sector worldwide. From 2019 to 2023, passenger numbers on these trips increased by 71%.

Experts also believe more Canadians are prioritizing local travel over U.S. vacations. With fewer people crossing the border, many are choosing to spend their travel budgets exploring their own country instead.

Expedition cruises offer travelers a unique chance to visit Canada’s remote coastlines, spot rare wildlife, and engage with Indigenous communities. These cruises often include guided excursions, cultural experiences, and educational programs, making them an attractive option for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

As the demand for domestic expedition travel rises, more Canadians are likely to embrace these immersive experiences, rediscovering the beauty and diversity of their own backyard.
