The latest tracking by Nanos Research indicates that fewer Canadians are contemplating voting for the federal Liberals, marking one of the lowest points in support for the party since Justin Trudeau became its leader (THE CANADIAN PRESS).

March 08, 2024

In a startling revelation, recent tracking by Nanos Research indicates a significant decline in Canadians considering voting for the federal Liberals, reaching levels unseen since Justin Trudeau assumed leadership. The plummeting support is evident, with only 36.2 percent of respondents open to casting their ballots for the Liberals—a stark contrast to the robust 50-60 percent range leading up to the 2015 federal election. Nik Nanos, CTV's esteemed pollster, emphasized the alarming shift, noting that the majority of Canadians no longer view the Liberals as a viable choice. This downward spiral is further highlighted by Nanos' findings, with the Conservatives now enjoying a staggering 20-point lead over their Liberal counterparts.

The dwindling support underscores a broader sentiment of disillusionment among voters, with Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives emerging as the favoured alternative. Nanos aptly describes the scenario as a potential "political spanking" for the Liberals if elections were held imminently. Despite concerted efforts by the Liberals to regain traction, including exhaustive campaigning against Poilievre and the Conservatives, the momentum remains firmly in the opposition's favour.

Compounding the Liberals' woes is the erosion of public trust in Trudeau's leadership, with a mere 30 percent of Canadians perceiving him as possessing the qualities of an effective political leader—a stark decline from the soaring 70 percent approval ratings witnessed in 2015 and 2016. The preference for Poilievre as prime minister further underscores the prevailing dissatisfaction with the incumbent government's performance.

With Canada's next general election looming on the horizon, the Liberals face an uphill battle to reverse their fortunes. Nanos points to the upcoming federal budget as a pivotal opportunity for the party to recalibrate its approach and reconnect with disillusioned voters. However, navigating the delicate balance between addressing public concerns and fiscal responsibility presents a formidable challenge for Trudeau's administration.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the urgency for the Liberals to enact substantive changes and regain public confidence cannot be overstated. With Nanos' latest findings underscoring a seismic shift in voter preferences, the road ahead appears fraught with uncertainty for Trudeau and his beleaguered party.
