Soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national address on Monday evening, tensions briefly rose near the Jammu and Kashmir border. Suspected drone sightings were reported in Samba, sparking security alerts and precautionary power cuts across the region.
Drones Spotted After Operation Sindoor Update
The incident unfolded only hours after PM Modi’s first public statement following the successful Operation Sindoor. At nearly the same time, top military officers from India and Pakistan had met to discuss cross-border issues. This sequence of events raised concerns over renewed aerial threats.
Around the same period, red flashing lights were seen in the sky above Samba. Loud blasts followed, as Indian air defence systems swung into action. These developments triggered speculation about Pakistani drone involvement along the sensitive border area.
Army Responds, Ensures Public Calm
The Indian Army swiftly responded to the threat. In an official statement, it confirmed that a few suspected drones had been seen near Samba. The defence forces had engaged them immediately. However, the Army assured that there was "no reason for concern."
Later in the evening, the Army declared the situation to be “calm and under full control.” It added that “no enemy drones are being reported at present,” indicating the immediate danger had passed.
Lights Off at Vaishno Devi Shrine Amid Drone Alerts
As the suspected drones were detected, precautionary measures were swiftly put in place. Lights were switched off at the Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine and along its pilgrimage route. These blackouts were implemented to reduce visibility and protect civilians and infrastructure.
Power Outages Across J&K and Punjab
Power cuts were reported across several key districts. Areas affected included Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Jammu. Punjab also took preventive measures. Blackouts were observed in parts of Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, and Jalandhar.
In Jalandhar, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal confirmed drone reports from Suranassi. “Lights have been switched off in some areas as a safety measure. Armed forces are on regular vigil,” he stated. No full blackout was in place, and residents were told there was no need to worry.
Air Raid Sirens and Blackouts in Amritsar
In Amritsar, the alarm was more pronounced. Air raid sirens were heard in the city, prompting a blackout. Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney urged people to stay indoors and away from windows. “We are alert and enforcing a blackout. Please remain calm,” she said in a public advisory.
Hoshiarpur also reported precautionary blackouts in Dasuya and Mukerian towns.
Drone Video Sparks Public Buzz
A video shared by ANI on social media platform X showed what appeared to be air defence systems engaging a drone. Red lights illuminated the night sky, followed by explosive sounds. Though unverified, the clip quickly went viral and added to the public anxiety.
Strategic Timing Raises Eyebrows
The timing of the drone sightings has led to speculation. It came soon after both PM Modi’s address and a meeting between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan. Whether the incidents were connected remains uncertain, but the proximity in timing is notable.
Authorities Ask Citizens to Stay Calm
Officials across states issued calm reassurances. They urged residents not to panic and wait for official updates on power restoration. “Do not panic. We will inform you once the situation stabilizes,” read a message from the local administration.
Vigilance High, Situation Under Control
While suspected Pakistani drones briefly caused alarm, the situation was quickly brought under control by the Indian Army. Security forces remain on high alert, with precautionary measures continuing in sensitive zones. The swift response served as a reminder of India's robust surveillance and defence preparedness amid growing cross-border tensions.
