The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is currently grappling with a significant cyber attack, the source of which remains undisclosed. The RCMP informed CBC News today that the scale of this breach is concerning. According to a spokesperson for the RCMP, the situation is unfolding rapidly, but as of now, there is no discernible impact on RCMP operations, nor is there any known threat to the safety and security of Canadians.

The RCMP has been proactive in implementing measures to identify and counter such threats. As per information shared with CBC News, the RCMP's websites have not been compromised thus far. However, it is noteworthy that this incident coincides with a warning from Canada's Communications Security Establishment (CSE), the government's cybersecurity and electronic surveillance agency. The CSE has cautioned IT departments to remain vigilant, particularly due to the upcoming second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which falls on Saturday. There is a concern that Russian government-affiliated threat actors or sympathetic groups may exploit this occasion by launching cyber attacks against countries supporting Ukraine. The CSE has highlighted potential activities ranging from website defacement and denial of service attacks to more severe actions.

It is pertinent to mention that the RCMP was recently involved in the dismantling of the LockBit ransomware gang, underscoring its active role in combating cyber threats. In response to queries seeking additional information, Marie-Eve Breton, an RCMP media relations officer, reiterated the statement provided to CBC News. Breton emphasized that while the breach is of significant concern, the swift response and mitigation strategies employed by the RCMP underscore the agency's efforts to detect and prevent such threats.

When asked about the nature of the breach, whether it involved hardware damage, or if it was a ransomware attack, Breton declined to provide further details, citing ongoing cyber and criminal investigations. She reiterated that, as of now, there is no impact on RCMP operations or any known threat to the safety and security of Canadians. Additionally, there have been no reported impacts on the safety and security of partners within Canada or abroad.

In summary, the RCMP is currently dealing with a serious cyber attack, the details of which are still being investigated. Despite the alarming nature of the breach, the RCMP's swift response and mitigation efforts have thus far prevented any discernible impact on its operations or the safety and security of Canadians. The incident is being closely monitored, and the RCMP is working diligently to address the situation and prevent future threats.
