The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set for a grand return with Avengers: Doomsday. The film brings back fan-favorite actors, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Hiddleston, alongside stars from X-Men, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four.
A Star-Studded Lineup
Marvel Studios revealed a massive cast list during an extended livestream. The announcement confirmed that Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon), and Winston Duke (M’Baku) will return.
The upcoming Thunderbolts film also contributes major names, including Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), and Lewis Pullman (Bob).
Adding to the excitement, actors from the original X-Men franchise—Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast)—are officially on board. Deadpool & Wolverine will also introduce Channing Tatum as Gambit, who will appear in Doomsday.
The new Fantastic Four team is also set to make an impact, featuring Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (The Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (The Human Torch).
A Surprise Return and Missing Faces
One unexpected return is Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, despite past controversies. Meanwhile, notable absences include Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America). Evans is rumored to appear in one of the two upcoming Avengers films, though nothing is confirmed.
Marvel insiders suggest that more names will be announced in the coming months.
Robert Downey Jr. Shocks Fans
The biggest surprise came at the end of the reveal. As the iconic Avengers theme played, the camera zoomed in on a director’s chair. The name on the back? Robert Downey Jr., but not as Iron Man. This time, he will portray the legendary villain Doctor Doom.
Marvel’s decision to bring back Downey Jr. marks a bold move. His return reunites him with the Russo Brothers, who directed Infinity War and Endgame. Reports suggest that Marvel boss Kevin Feige personally pitched the role to Downey Jr., who later convinced the Russo Brothers to direct once again.
What’s Next for the MCU?
Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on May 7, 2027.
The Russo Brothers have revealed that managing such a large cast is a massive challenge. They even use magnetic baseball cards to keep track of each character—a system they previously used while working on Infinity War and Endgame.
As the MCU gears up for its next big phase, one thing is certain: Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be an event fans won’t want to miss.
