The Last of Us wasted no time delivering a gut punch in Season 2. Just two episodes in, the beloved Joel Miller is gone. And his brutal end is as shocking as it is heart-wrenching.

Pedro Pascal’s character doesn’t fall to infected monsters. Instead, he’s viciously killed by Abby Anderson, played by Kaitlyn Dever. Her weapon of choice? A golf club. Her motive? Revenge for her father's death.

A Death Years in the Making

Joel’s death isn’t a surprise to fans of the original video game. It was always part of the story’s DNA. Executive producer Craig Mazin confirms this was planned from the start. When Pascal signed on, he knew Joel’s time was limited.

“Loss is how this story works,” says Mazin. “We told Pedro early on. This was going to happen.”

The show doesn’t stretch Joel’s arc. Instead, it offers one episode and a bit to build Abby’s backstory. A key flashback shows her discovering her father’s corpse in the hospital. He was the surgeon Joel killed in the Season 1 finale while saving Ellie.

Abby spent five years hunting Joel. When she finally traps him, there’s a chilling moment of unspoken understanding. Joel seems to accept his fate.

Violence That Leaves a Mark

The scene is brutal but restrained. The show avoids graphic visuals. Instead, it focuses on emotional intensity. “We wanted it to feel real,” says Mazin. “The violence had to hurt emotionally more than visually.”

Abby doesn’t stop at one blow. She breaks her club and drives it into Joel’s neck. Even her fellow Fireflies are shaken. Owen pleads with her to end it. Mel, the medic, is in tears.

The camera pulls back, but the pain lingers. Joel’s broken body is later dragged through the snow. Ellie watches in horror.

A Circle of Grief and Revenge

Joel’s death ignites a dangerous fire in Ellie. Bella Ramsey’s performance makes it clear—she’s out for blood. Her chilling line, “You’re all going to die,” signals a dark path ahead.

“This story isn’t about revenge,” Mazin explains. “It’s about grief. And how far it can push someone.”

The cycle of pain doesn’t end with Joel. Abby’s own reaction shows it. After finally getting justice, she feels… empty. “There’s no remorse,” Mazin notes. “But there’s no peace either.”

Joel (Pedro Pascal) meets a horrific death in season 2 of The Last of Us. The producer said it was meant to happen.

Joel’s Journey Isn’t Over Yet

Though Joel is dead, Pedro Pascal isn’t done. Flashbacks or imagined moments will keep him in the narrative. A tense scene with Ellie, hinted at in the trailer, is still to come.

Season 2 now shifts its focus. The spotlight turns to Ellie, Dina, Tommy, and the emotional fallout of Joel’s death.

Mazin leaves us with a final thought: “Good drama makes you feel something. And this? This hurts in all the right ways.”
