Hollywood legend Gene Hackman died from heart disease, with Alzheimer’s and prolonged fasting playing major roles.

A newly released autopsy report confirms the 95-year-old Oscar-winning actor suffered from congestive heart failure. He had also undergone an aortic valve replacement and lived with an irregular heartbeat. In 2019, doctors implanted a pacemaker to help regulate his heart rhythm.

Advanced Alzheimer’s and Fasting Complicated Gene Heckman’s Final Days

Hackman was also in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Medical examiners noted signs of prolonged fasting, indicating he hadn’t eaten for quite some time. A low level of acetone found in his system confirmed this.

This discovery paints a heartbreaking picture. It's likely Hackman became unaware of his condition — and possibly even of his wife's death.

Wife’s Sudden Illness Linked to Rare Virus

Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, reportedly died a week before him, on February 11. Though her autopsy is yet to be released, officials suspect hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Hantavirus is rare but deadly, spread by infected rodent droppings. Interestingly, Hackman tested negative for the virus. His carbon monoxide levels were also found to be normal.

Pacemaker Provided Key Death Clue

On February 18, Hackman's pacemaker recorded irregular activity, signaling the likely date of his death. This finding gave authorities a clearer timeline, suggesting he passed away alone after Arakawa.

Signs of a Desperate Search for Help

Prior to their deaths, Arakawa had searched online for flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques. Investigators found records of her phone calls, indicating she was trying to understand a sudden illness.

Authorities believe Hackman may have been unaware of her passing. His mental and physical decline likely left him confused and isolated in their home.

Ongoing Investigation and Search for Clues

Videos released recently show investigators re-examining the Hackman residence and interviewing staff members. In early March, detectives returned to the property looking for Arakawa’s laptop and other digital evidence.

They hope to piece together the couple’s final days with more clarity.

No Alcohol or Drugs Found in Gene’s System

Toxicology tests confirmed Hackman had no alcohol or intoxicating drugs in his body. The presence of acetone was the only chemical concern, tied to starvation or fasting.

As the entertainment world mourns the loss of a cinematic icon, the circumstances of his death offer a sobering reminder of vulnerability — even in fame.

A Quiet End to a Storied Life

Gene Hackman gave the world unforgettable performances. Yet, in the end, he died quietly, possibly unaware, beside the love of his life.

The ongoing investigation seeks to close the final chapter with answers. But for fans, Hackman’s legacy remains etched in history.
