Tom Cruise made a heartfelt appearance at CinemaCon on Thursday, paying tribute to his late Top Gun co-star, Val Kilmer, before unveiling an action-packed preview of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.

An Emotional Tribute to Val Kilmer from Tom Cruise

Cruise opened his speech with an emotional nod to Val Kilmer, who passed away earlier this week. Speaking to a room full of movie theater owners, he reflected on Kilmer’s impact on cinema.

"He loved movies and gave so much through his performances," Cruise said. He expressed deep admiration for Kilmer, recalling their time working together on both Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

To honor Kilmer’s memory, Cruise called for a moment of silence, briefly pausing the otherwise high-energy event.

"Thank you, Val. I wish you well on your next journey," he concluded.

Celebrating Christopher McQuarrie

CinemaCon also recognized Christopher McQuarrie, affectionately known as McQ, as Director of the Year. Unlike most celebrity speeches, which last just a few minutes, Cruise gave a 20-minute tribute to his longtime collaborator.

He reminisced about McQuarrie’s career, noting that at just 26 years old, he had already won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for The Usual Suspects.

"Most people are still finding their voice at that age, but McQ had already changed cinema," Cruise said.

Their partnership began with the 2008 war film, Valkyrie, and has since grown into a lasting creative bond. McQuarrie took over the Mission: Impossible franchise with its fifth installment, Rogue Nation, and has played a key role in its evolution.

Cruise praised McQuarrie’s leadership, especially during challenges like pandemic lockdowns and Hollywood strikes, crediting him for keeping the films alive.

"He didn’t do it for personal glory but out of responsibility to our industry," he said.

Paramount’s Blockbuster Lineup

While Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning stole the spotlight, Paramount Pictures unveiled an exciting lineup of films.

The event kicked off with a high-energy stunt show, featuring motorcyclists flying off ramps while smoke filled the air, setting the tone for what’s to come.

The studio also teased:

The Running Man – A dystopian thriller directed by Edgar Wright, starring Glen Powell, Colman Domingo, and Josh Brolin.

The Naked Gun Reboot – A fresh take on the comedy classic, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson.

Roofman – A real-life crime thriller introduced by Channing Tatum, celebrating his decade of achievement in film.

Smurfs & SpongeBob – Animated hits featuring Rihanna and Mark Hamill.

Paramount’s Future Amid Industry Changes

Despite the studio’s recent merger with Skydance, Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins reassured the audience of a bright future.

"I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished amid all the changes," Robbins said.

With big-budget action films, animated favorites, and reboots of classic franchises, Paramount is betting big on theater-driven entertainment in the coming years.
