In the ongoing saga of a stray kangaroo in southern Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is contemplating public mischief charges against an individual who provided a false report about a kangaroo sighting in Lambton County.
According to a social media update from OPP West Region on Wednesday, Lambton County OPP initially received a report of a kangaroo on Douglas Line, near Forest, Ontario. A video submitted to the police depicted the kangaroo standing on the side of the road, prompting OPP to ask the public to report any further sightings of the animal.
However, in a subsequent update, OPP clarified that the kangaroo seen in Lambton County was the same one spotted on Tuesday in Chatham-Kent. This revelation indicated that it was not a separate incident but rather a misreporting of the original sighting.
The initial report came from an Amazon driver who spoke to CTV News in Windsor. Recounting the experience, the driver stated, “I deliver Amazon in and around Ridgetown. I was driving down Kenesserie Road to my next drop, and I saw what I assumed to be a deer [I see them all the time on my route], but I realized that deer don't have tiny arms like that haha. I hit the brake and backed up…sure enough, it was a kangaroo!”
The Chatham-Kent kangaroo's escapade was short-lived, as staff members promptly rounded up the adventurous marsupial and safely returned it to Greenview Aviaries.
In light of this clarification, OPP is now considering public mischief charges against the individual responsible for the erroneous report in Lambton County. Public mischief charges typically involve knowingly providing false information to law enforcement, and in this case, the OPP is evaluating whether such charges are warranted.
In conclusion, the case of the misplaced kangaroo takes a turn as OPP considers legal action against the person behind the false report in Lambton County.
