During Friday's season-opening victory against Rider, East Carolina University's sophomore, Parker Byrd, made a remarkable appearance on the baseball field with a prosthetic leg. Byrd lost part of his right leg in a boating accident in 2022.
According to the university, Byrd is believed to be the first NCAA Division I baseball player to compete in a game with a prosthetic leg. Malcolm Gray, the athletic spokesman, stated that the Byrd family conducted extensive research but found no other examples. However, Greg Johnson, a spokesman for the NCAA, mentioned that the organization doesn't keep records of such occurrences.
Hailing from Laurinburg, North Carolina, Byrd received a warm reception from the home crowd as he walked to the plate in the eighth inning. Despite taking a first-pitch strike, he managed to draw four consecutive balls, securing a spot on base. The Pirates then substituted freshman Jason Janesko as a pinch runner.
Reflecting on his postgame interview with reporters, Byrd expressed, "Chill bumps, man. It's absolutely phenomenal."
Pirates coach Cliff Godwin shared his pride in Byrd's achievement with WCTI-TV in New Bern, describing it as "one of the proudest moments I have ever had as a coach." He emphasized Byrd's hard work and the emotional impact of the moment, recounting a conversation with the home plate umpire, who expressed that it was the coolest moment he had experienced in his 17-18 years of umpiring. Both Godwin and the umpire found themselves moved by Byrd's remarkable performance.
