Apple's iPhone shipments showed signs of stability in the June quarter, coinciding with a broader growth in the smartphone market. Independent research revealed that global smartphone shipments increased by 6.5%, while sales to consumers rose by 6%, thanks in part to aggressive discounts during China's 618 shopping festival.
This year's shopping event played a significant role in boosting sales in China, which is the largest mobile market in the world. Brands like Xiaomi and Huawei have been gaining traction, making the competition tougher for Apple. Research data indicates that the iPhone has been recovering since March, highlighting a positive trend in sales.
According to IDC, Apple shipped 45.2 million iPhones during this quarter, which marks a 1.5% increase compared to the same time last year. In contrast, Counterpoint Research reported a slight decline of 1% in end-user sales. Despite this, both research groups noted that Apple lost some market share during this period. Xiaomi emerged as the standout performer, primarily due to its affordable devices appealing to consumers in emerging markets.
The iPhone faces challenges in China, not only from local competitors but also due to a government ban on foreign devices in state-run workplaces. However, Apple has managed to maintain steady sales through discounts and the introduction of new features powered by artificial intelligence. Samsung, the market leader, is also focusing on AI advancements in its latest phone models, further intensifying competition.
Nabila Popal, IDC's research director, noted that Apple's momentum improved significantly in the second quarter compared to the negative growth seen in the first quarter. She attributed this recovery partly to heavy promotions in various regions and a resurgence in customer confidence following Apple's recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where the company unveiled its AI strategy.
Overall, the smartphone market's growth reflects a strong demand for new technology, with consumers eager to explore the latest innovations. Apple's efforts to enhance its offerings with AI features and competitive pricing are crucial for maintaining its position in a rapidly evolving landscape.
