A dangerous thunderstorm swept through Edmonton Thursday night, causing damage and forcing people indoors. The storm, described as “very dangerous” by federal weather experts, brought wind gusts of up to 130 km/h.
The province issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 7:30 p.m. through its emergency alert system. Areas included in the warning were Edmonton, Strathcona County, Leduc County, Camrose County, Wetaskiwin County, and parts of Beaver County near Tofield.
Officials told people to take cover right away if a storm approached. If caught outside, they were advised to stay safe from flying debris or hail.
Such alerts are sent out when a storm is expected to bring strong wind, heavy rain, or large hail.
During the Edmonton Oilers’ playoff game, fans gathered outside in the Ice District were quickly moved indoors to Ford Hall near Rogers Place.
In the Malmo neighbourhood, strong winds knocked over trees. One large tree was seen blocking a street as the storm rolled in.
Hot Weather Continues
Even with the storm, heat remained a concern. Most parts of Alberta were still under heat warnings. On Wednesday, Edmonton reached 29°C. The temperature was expected to rise even more Thursday, hitting a high of 31°C.
A cold front was expected to move across Alberta from west to east during the evening. This could lead to more showers and thunderstorms later in the day.
The storms could again bring high winds, heavy rain, and large hail, especially in central and north-central Alberta.
While not every area will be hit by strong storms, most places will still get gusty winds and some rain.
The Days Ahead
Friday will be a bit cooler and calmer in Edmonton, with a high around 24°C. But by Saturday, the heat returns. Temperatures are expected to reach about 28°C, and there is a chance of evening thunderstorms again.
Next week will be cooler, with daytime highs between 18°C and 22°C from Sunday through Thursday.
