Waterton Lakes National Park thrives with tourism. (Image Source: Global News CA)

January 09, 2024

Southern Alberta, despite experiencing a relatively mild winter, is set to benefit from the recent snowfall over the weekend, marking the first significant snow of 2024. This development presents a favourable opportunity for winter tourism in the region.

Dallas Meidinger, representing Parks Canada in Waterton Lakes National Park, acknowledged the role of the warmer weather in attracting people to enjoy the off-season. The park experienced a notable increase in winter visitation, with around 10,000 visitors in December alone. This marked a 39% year-over-year rise and a 23% increase compared to the preceding year.

The fresh snowfall opens up avenues for classic winter activities, with snowshoeing, winter hiking, and cross-country skiing being popular options. The Alkimina Parkway, in particular, is a favored recreational area.

Keith Robinson, co-founder and president of Dark Sky Guides, emphasized the expansion of winter offerings in Waterton. In addition to interpretive night tours and stargazing, the town is introducing snowshoeing tours. These tours are designed for individuals new to snowshoeing, providing equipment and instruction for those wanting to try the activity without a significant investment.

Winter in Waterton offers a unique opportunity to explore the national park without the usual summer crowds. Robinson highlighted the lack of a downhill ski resort, traditionally limiting recognized winter activities, making it an opportune time to enhance the visitor experience.

Dark Sky Tours, in November, introduced a planetarium in the town site, offering guests a virtual 360-degree view of the night sky within an inflatable dome located inside the Falls Interpretive Theatre.

Alberta Minister of Tourism and Sport, Joseph Schow, expressed the importance of winter tourism for the province. In Budget 2023, the province committed $211.3 million to expand outdoor recreation and amenities over the next three years, aiming to reduce barriers for visitors wanting to experience Alberta.

As winter tourism gains momentum, Parks Canada and officials stress the importance of being prepared for the conditions. This includes checking avalanche reports online and ensuring proper equipment, especially for those venturing into avalanche terrain. Meidinger highlighted the necessity of having training and equipment like beacons, probes, and shovels, along with completing an avalanche safety course for a safe winter recreation experience.
