Detroit and Canada are facing delays in the opening of the second bridge over the Detroit River, with officials now targeting a fall 2025 completion, several months beyond the initial estimate.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge, named after a former Detroit Red Wings hockey player, faced construction disruptions in the U.S. and Canada due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Initially scheduled for completion in 2024, the new target is set for September 2025, with the bridge deck expected to be finished this year. The project's cost has increased to CA$6.4 billion ($4.79 billion) from the initial CA$5.7 billion ($4.27 billion).
The bridge, named after hockey legend Gordie Howe, will be the second crossing connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, complementing the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which is crucial for U.S.-Canadian trade, especially in the automotive sector.
