The recent conflict between Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador escalated dramatically when Ecuadorian police conducted a surprising raid on Mexico's embassy. This action, widely condemned as a breach of international agreements, occurred in the context of a deteriorating relationship between the two countries.

The catalyst for this crisis was the presence of Ecuador's former Vice President Jorge Glas in the Mexican embassy. Glas, who had sought refuge there in December, was a convicted criminal and fugitive. Despite Ecuador's demand for his expulsion, Mexico allowed him to stay, citing legal frameworks for international protection.

However, Ecuador's Attorney General Diana Salazar accused Glas of involvement in bribery linked to a notorious drug trafficker, casting doubt on his eligibility for asylum. In response, Ecuador warned Mexico against granting asylum, citing international agreements that prohibit offering asylum to individuals facing criminal charges.

Subsequently, a judge ordered Glas to return to prison, prompting Ecuador to request permission from Mexico to arrest him within the embassy. Meanwhile, President López Obrador publicly questioned the legitimacy of Ecuador's recent election, further straining diplomatic relations.

In retaliation, Ecuador expelled Mexico's ambassador and ordered her to leave the country. Mexico, in turn, granted Glas political asylum, prompting Ecuadorian authorities to raid the embassy in an attempt to arrest him. The raid, condemned by Mexico as a violation of diplomatic conventions, led to a rupture in diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Following the raid, Glas was forcibly removed from the embassy by Ecuadorian police and taken to a maximum-security prison. Mexico announced the severance of diplomatic ties with Ecuador and vowed to challenge the incident at the International Court of Justice.

The confrontation between Ecuador and Mexico underscores the complexities of diplomatic relations and the challenges of balancing legal obligations with political considerations.
