In eastern Newfoundland, health authorities have declared an outbreak of whooping cough. The outbreak has resulted in 42 reported cases since February, predominantly affecting children. Although most cases involve children, individuals ranging from two months to 89 years old have been affected. The situation is described as evolving, prompting close monitoring by public health officials.

To address the outbreak, health authorities have established an appointment-only testing clinic in St. John's for individuals experiencing symptoms or those who have been in contact with confirmed cases. The province's chief medical officer of health emphasized the importance of vaccinations, urging residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection preventable through routine childhood vaccinations and treatable with antibiotics.
